Copyranter points us to this commercial for Bird’s Eye fish fingers starring three dirty-minded fish sticks. A fair amount of lady blogs out there spill a lot of virtual ink over how misogynist, sexist, and exploitative commercials are when female sexuality is used to sell something. Frankly, I don’t see what the big deal is. Take, for example, this commercial. I thought it was funny. I’m fascinated by the idea that a bunch of executives would sit around in a boardroom and agree to spend however many hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a commercial featuring three talking fish sticks, as if that will make you want to eat fish fingers. Silly? Yes. Offensive? I don’t get it. But maybe that’s just me. You? [Copyranter]

I think it probably misses half the usual audience for fish finger ads, since it’s not likely to appeal to kids (who will then nag their parents into buying the food whose ads appeal to them) and I don’t know many adults who buy fish sticks for themselves, but it is funny!

Jessalyn: I think that’s the point, is that they are trying to appeal to adults with a slightly more expensive fish that is also supposedly good for you. In any case, I thought it was funny… and I’m a feminist and a vegan.

I’m not a big fish stick person, but salmon fish fingers sound kinda gross…although the commercial gets a little giggle.

Hmmm. I would have thought the fish sticks would stand up after seeing the pink instead of going limp once they saw it.

To me, this simply spreads the message that fish cause impotence.

I also think this is funny. I’m sooooooo tired of EVERYTHING portraying a female being sexist. It’s tiring. Some things are just meant to be silly and funny, and that’s okay. Just LAUGH.
