Bernie Madoff Gets 150 Years In The Slammer

Bernie Madoff was just sentenced to 150 years in prison for running a ponzi scheme that spanned 20 years, rolled $65 billion into his pocket, and swindled many bold-faced names like Jon Malkovich, Steven Spielberg, Elie Weisel, Kevin Bacon, and Kyra Sedgwick. Now, this guy deserves some serious punishment, but 150 years? The average American man lives to be 75, and Bernie is 71 now. Which means, oh, four years in prison. Why didn’t the judge just say “life?” [NY Times]

• In 2007, a Georgia judge sentenced two arm robbers, Ryan Brandt (28) and Jeffrey Kollie (25), to life in prison, plus an additional 265 years each. Many thought it was excessive, since no one was killed in the robberies. Interestingly, these guys turned down a plea bargain that would have given them 40 years each. [August Chronicle]
• A few weeks ago, in a controversial case, a teenage boy was sentenced to 100 years in prison for fondling a 6-year-old neighbor. Why so controversial? Because this teen was mentally disabled and had an IQ of 47. So prison is just not the right place for him. [MSNBC]
• Last year, Keith O. Wood, the “East End Rapist” who attacked five women in Pittsburgh, was sentenced to 160 years in prison. [Pittsburgh Channel]
• The longest sentence ever given in the United States? In 1981, Dudley Wayne Kyzer was sentenced to 10,000 years in prison in Alabama after murdering his wife, his mother-in-law, and a college student. Shocker—he’s still there. [TruTV]
• A not-so-distant second place goes to Darron Bennalford Anderson, who was sentenced to 2,000 years for rape, kidnapping, and larceny. He tried to appeal the ruling—and was slapped with a sentence of 7,250 years. [List Sargeant]
