Barack Obama basically clinched the Democratic nomination for President last night and before he gave his monumental speech (he’s the first African-American to ever win the nomination for President of the United States), he and his insanely awesome, hot, purple-clad wife Michelle (we told you purple was on the up-and-up!) shared a fist bump. For some reason, this made me squeal in delight. I never realized how romantic and respectful and mutually appreciative and loving a frat-tastic fist bump could be. Could it be the new peck-on-the-cheek?
They totally got that from The Bachelorette. Jesse the snowboarder gave DeAnna a fist bump when he first met her...then he did again to Ellen when he met her on the Ellen DeGeneres show.
Ummm, no, I doubt they got it from homeboy from the Bachlorette. Black folks have been doing the “fist bump” for quite some time now. Actually, we call it giving each other a “pound”
We might need to do a fashion story about Michelle Obama-inspired looks. And, to be politically even, we could do a “How To” story about putting on eyeliner like Cindy McCain.
Ann at Feministing had this to say about the fist bump:
“I think that little gesture is striking because it was a visual representation of a partnership, a signal that this victory is something they’ve accomplished together. It’s an entirely different image than the ‘you go get ‘em, honey!’-style hug or reassuring pat on the arm that we’re used to seeing from candidates’ wives.”
I just know that this is FAR better than anything involving Barbara Bush, unless she’s making me a Coconut Cream pie, because that’s what grandmothers do well.

I’m going to start doing the fist bump. Hilarious. McCain always gives Cindy a stiff kiss on the cheek.

I howled when I saw the dap. Awesome. Shows that they’re real, down to earth folk.

How hot is Michelle’s outfit? Purple shift dress with studded black, leather belt and pearls! I will be rocking that look pronto.
