Attack Of The Drug Resistant Acne!
Is a pizza face staring back out at you from the mirror? Your skin isn’t just freaking out because you fell asleep with makeup on—you could have a strain of drug-resistant super-acne on your hands.
I mean, your face.
Antibiotic acne meds were once the salvation of the spotted. But just like the germs which develop a resistance to the widespread use of anti-bacterial hand lotions, the bacteria strain P. acnes bacterium is getting stronger and resisting the antibiotics commonly prescribed to kill it, dermatologists report. Doctors are increasingly seeing drugs are no match for super-acne, says MSNBC. In 2001, a French study found that 50 percent of samples of P. acnes bacterium were resistant to the acne antibiotic, Erythromycin. Eeeeek!
But don’t let this news stress you into another nasty breakout: Doctors are changing tactics to fight the war on zits! A derm may still prescribe antibiotics in conjunction with another medication to squelch La Resistance!, or prescribe antibiotics for a limited time, so the body can’t build up a resistance. my stress induced cystic acne started in the 4th grade.
10 dermatologists, diet changes, antibiotics, expensive creams…I finally cured it with uncoated 99 cent aspirin from CVS. It is salcyctic acid, the same stuff in all of the mass marketed products.
My niece had an infected nose piercing and the dr recommended dissolving aspirin in a few drops of water and applying the paste.
the magic cure for me was five aspirins a night as a light scrub/mask for 15 minutes followed by a thin raw honey mask for 15 minutes.
honey is the best antibacterial stuff on earth…it is also an awesome moisturizer.
First week is the ugly pore purge…I’ve been zit/dry skin free for a year with the added bonus that I’m not putting a bunch of unknown ingredients on my skin.

So freaking true! I’m 21 and have had acne since I was at least 11. I’ve been on so much crap. Erythromycin gave me hives. Minocyclin gave me Pseudotumor cerebrei. At the moment I’m not really on anything, except I have a basketful of cleansers, moisturizors, topical creams, etc, and none of it freaking works. I have a feeling I’ll be 50 years old and still stuck with this face.

Just as an FYI to fellow acne victims - I took dairy out of my diet, and my skin cleared up. This was after switching cleansers and treatments and makeups a zillion times.
Now, I limit myself to “cheating with cheese” to only a couple of times a month, but it’s such a relief to not be fighting a battle with my skin. And it’s a small sacrifice for smooth skin, instead of pumping drugs and chemicals into my body.
All our bodies our different, but I feel that it’s worth it to try and find the cause of your acne instead of chasing after treatments for the symptoms. Best of luck on that journey!!

Everyone hold on to your lunches because….I know some people who actually use urine on their faces to cure their acne. Yeah. They collect their pee in a jar and apply it with a cotton ball, like a toner. Some absolutely rave about it and it didn’t work for some….I just don’t know if I could do it!

@bkliniiite, did Accutane really not work for you? For all you people with acne, you’ve got to see a dermatologist. None of this hear say… it’s a waste of time and wasted time=scars.

Accutane is a scourge of the planet earth, all it did was make my face fall off.

^ Chee…se, Yes, Accutane is a scourge that made my uterine lining fall out in sheets. Thank god I was able to have my child. I don’t recommend that drug at all, but esp to reproductively-minded women.

@Retro Chic: Ouch, I pseudo-feel (not really) your pain. It was like I had really really really bad sunburn on my face and I could just peel it off at will. *shudder* Thankfully no more of that.

@Chee…se, Thanks, the pain was in wardrobe, shoes, flooring, medical and distressing humiliation costs, too. I’m glad your inner tanner has moved on, maybe to the outdoors more. How’s that going, anyway?

It used to be that the moment I walk into a dermatologist’s office, the first word that left his mouth was “Accutane.” I didn’t think the side effects were worth it (destroyed liver and mood? No thanks) so I refused EVERY TIME. I dealt for years with cystic painful acne. What worked for me was taking birth control (NuvaRing to be exact). Now I only get an occasional pimple and I treat it with Neosporin.

Plain and Simple:
Acne is a way of your body telling you something is wrong.
Whether it is from hormones, diet, stress etc…
Taking Accutane is like using heroin to cure alcoholism.
Urine is sterile and the acne fighting uric acid is an option. Honey is also sterile and I prefer the salcytic acid in plain aspirin to peepee.
Also, I went on NuvaRing when it first came out to combat ovarian cysts. It made my adrenal glands go into overtime and then shut down.
My ob/gyn at the time seemed to care about the drug company kickbacks for prescribing nuvaring than the SEVERE sweating and tremors it caused me. I imagine it is the same thing for Accutane.
My acne and ovarian cysts were also caused, in part, by an amino acid inbalance.
When I asked my Dr why he prescribed surgery instead of Evening Primrose Oil (which I also swear by) he said “Western medicine doesn’t believe in folk remedies”...
I told him that Ben Franklin once broke ranks with popular science by allowing trees on his property because doctors believed at the time that trees were bad for the air.
Thank God for internet research.
