Are You A Closeted Uggs Wearer?
Looks like someone has been dipping into the unflattering trend pool of yore. Leighton Meester was spotted on the set of “Gossip Girl” making a change from what appears to be the high heels of her costume to a pair of Uggs on her break. (Unless Blair has some scene where she’s trying to be ironic? Doubtful.) Seems everyone except for Jessica Simpson has put Uggs on the banned fashions list, and we know a lot of girls who wouldn’t be caught dead in the winter boots (we really would have thought Leighton would be in that group).
But, you gotta admit ... they are super warm and comfy. Like walking on clouds! So come clean—do you still have those pink Uggs circa 2003 in your closet? Break them out from time to time? [Um, yes, yes I do.—Editor] In public? Blair would never!

GOD NO. I may have done some shameful things in my life, but I can happily say that wearing hideous boots that make me stumpier than God intended is not one of them.

Uggs. Are not. Winter boots. They are for post-SURFING.

I hate Uggs. HATE them. I have detested them for years, however my last weekend home I stole my mom’s pair with the intent to wear them to and from class. In my defense I live in Eau Claire, WI, so it’s really freaking cold. But even though there’s valid justification, I’ve been too ashamed to wear them yet.

I’m proud to say I don’t have any Uggs or Crocs in my closet, and never have owned them. Flip flops are as tacky as I get, and I wear them only in summertime.

Not being a surfer, I would only wear them as cold-weather slippers indoors. In fact, I recently bought a pair of shearling boots (not Uggs—why would I spend that much on slippers??) just for that purpose.
I’d be interested to go to Australia and see if Uggs are the unreasonably-priced fashion item they are here. I would guess not.

One of my exes had a pair of Uggs that she pretty much only wore to walk her dog in the morning. She called them “slut shoes.”
I’ve never been one to care much about women’s shoes, but Uggs will probably always remind me of her, and of all the sorority types on the UT-Austin campus who wore them with short skirts. Ugh.

No, but my closet is.
Only hauled out for extreme conditions.
In LA, whenever that is.
And they’re knock-offs too.

I must be crazy….what the heck does everyone where in the winter with snow on the ground? I unfortunately have been blessed with cankles and cannot wear the normal leather winter boots…and Uggs are the only ones that fit and that keep me warm in the winter.

I have a pair of Uggs but not the style that is considered fashionable, has the thick rubber treaded sole, and when I’m trekking through the city I just wear them underneath my jeans and only the dark brown rounded toe shows. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Also I’m just out of college where everyone has at least 2 pairs, and are wearing the knee high purple kind with a mini skirt so I feel like if its a transgression to want to wear warm boots underneath my clothes…well so be it.

@hottamale - I wear boots…just not Uggs. Most of my days involve going to work, maybe shopping or out with friends, and coming home. So I can wear “fashion boots” during the week. And on the weekends if I’m playing in the snow or something (or when I take my dog out), I wear warm socks and rubber boots because they’re waterproof and keep your toes dry. There are a MILLION winter boots out there that are not Uggs.

@hottamale - We wear winter boots. Mine are fairly heavy-duty Goretex/waterproof hiking boots. Not all boots are ugg boots. Also, uggs are suede, so aesthetics aside, they would be my last pick for winter boots.

@eden - Even if Uggs aren’t intended to be winter boots they work awesome as such.
I live in interior Alaska and wear uggs (begrudgingly) every day in the winter. I never ever tuck them into my jeans and the whole town is wearing winter boots constantly so it isn’t so weird. But it isn’t just that they’re warm - the soles are soft enough that they don’t slide around so bad on ice, a problem I have with a lot of fancier boots. I try to walk to work when it isn’t super cold and they’re also a heck of a lot lighter than any other winter boot I’ve tried.

In this girl’s defense (I don’t watch Gossip Girl so I don’t really know much about her) shooting a show can be a marathon ordeal. Some celebs change into slippers between shots just to give themselves a little down time before stepping back into heels for another 8 hours. I doubt this girl would be wearing them out and about on the street.
As for Uggs I have never owned a pair. I live in South Florida so I have no pressing need to keep my feet warm around the house and I would not wear them out in public.

When I lived in Kentucky, I would never have been caught dead in Uggs. After I moved to Wisconsin, and I discovered what COLD really was, Uggs became a necessity. I dont wear Uggs for formal wear, or to parties, but they are fine to wear to class.

I own 6 pairs of uggs. lol.
I’m wearing some tall grey ones. I think they are comfortable, and you thong wearers can freeze your toes off! I live in L.A and its never cold, but in my office its freaking freezing. Hopefully I don’t look like a slutty midget, like you guys are all mentioning. lmao.

I think it’s all about the appropriate time to wear them. I once saw two girls wearing white, tank-top mini dresses with huge, fur-latent boots (not Uggs, but similar) up to their knees.
If it’s warm enough to be wearing tank-mini dresses, don’t bust out the emergency snow-gear, okay?
Likewise, on a cold, wintery day paired with jeans and a warm, coat, I’d much rather have a pair of boots than flip-flops or open toes.

Get your facts straight. Ugg boots are for ALL weather - they are sheepskin and are used for winter and summer because they keep your feet a consistent temperature all year round. In Australia, women wear them to the beach.
Look at the Ugg website because I can’t be bothered to write it all down here.
There is a little thing called “responsibility” when reporting or even writing fluff articles such as the one here. If you want ANY credibility then at least take the few minutes to do a BIT of research at the very least.
Now go read the site and stop misleading your readers.

I just bought a pair of the Rosie Uggs in brown…they are the mid calf, 2-inch heel with laces in front. But to be honest I don’t know what to wear them with. They don’t really pass for the frumpy Ugg look. Any suggestions?

I have a pair, I love em- they feel like fluffy clouds of sheep. I could care less what was trendy and what isn’t, they’re comfy, easy to get on and off and give me something else to wear on my feet besides chucks or doc martens when I’m trying to be comfortable.

I wont lie,my spring-summer-fall show is flipflops, but my winter shoe is fake Uggs. I am no dumbie and either buy the ones from Payless or I will buy Bearpaws at the end of the winter season when they are cheaper and wear them next winter.

I reside in Seattle, and sorry to all the fashion editors out there, but we have about 60 days of cute shoe weather per year. Hell yeah I wear Uggs (not pink, and definitely not 2003) and I also rock (Burberry) galoshes. I can’t afford to ruin shoes on a daily basis. Plus, I hate cold water on my toes, ick!
I make up for it with gorgeous handbags

@Frederica Bimble—I didn’t get the feeling that the “winter boot” aspect of Uggs was being actually emphasized in the article; rather, I believe the emphasis was on their ugliness/unstylishness, which is year-round. I feel like it is a little unreasonable to get all up in arms over such a minor misstep, if you could even call it that—especially since in North American usage, at least, Uggs are mostly cooler-weather gear, since they’re well-insulated. (Here we tend to need insulation against the cold more than insulation against burning-hot sand.)
——
Anyhoo. I live in my Sorel pack boots during the winter back home in Western WA. Honestly, they don’t come off my feet from when I put them on in the morning to walk the dog to when I take them off to shower at night, even if I only spend a grand total of two hours outside that day. (I have a cold house.) When there isn’t much snow/when it’s just muddy and rainy, I have the plain ol’ waterproof hiking boot option; not as well insulated, but the soles are made for harder surfaces and won’t wear down as much as the snow boots’ soles would if I wore them on pavement.
I don’t have much use for “city” boots where I’m from.

I have never, will never, wear Uggs. I think they’re perfectly ug(g)ly and, moreover, not winter boots at all.
For winter here in MN, I have proper (and yet still feminine) cold-weather boots. When we get huge snowfalls or I’m traipsing around when it’s 20 below, it’s to hell with fashion and on with the survival-gear boots.
Strangely, a few of the kids up here wear them even in snow, but they don’t look as if they’re faring very well (soaking wet, no traction), and you always see a few with the ridiculous bare legs, miniskirt, and Uggs – which unfortunately to me just looks trashy. There are ways to wear boots and skirts, but that’s not it.
