Annie Leibovitz Gets Sued
Last summer, photography mastermind Annie Leibovitz was strapped for cash, so she took out a $24 million loan from a finance company called Art Capital Group. Supposedly, for collateral on the loan, she used all her photos and her homes Manhattan and Upstate New York. Well, Art Capital Group is claiming that Annie is in breach of contract, and filed a lawsuit this week demanding that Annie let appraisers into her homes so they can estimate the value and start selling everything off. Meanwhile, Annie says this is BS. [NY Times]
So can this company really sell all her photos? That seems kind of wrong. You shoot gorgeous Vanity Fair covers, and you get no respect.

Question: why in the hell did Annie need to borrow $24 million in the first place????

I’m a photographer and I can tell you right now: the two things you never put up as collateral are your photos and your cameras.

Um, yeah. That doesn’t seem wrong at all. You put X up for collateral on a loan and default, kiss X goodbye, no matter how talented you are at what you do. It’s only wrong/disrespectful if she is actually in compliance with her contract.
I’m also sharing Kiki’s thought - why does someone borrow $24 MILLION in the first place? dang.

I love photography. And I love many photographers. I also love photo-journalism. BUT I cannot stand Annie Leibovitz as a photographer. Many (not all) of her photo shoots seem too pre-meditated (which is fine in many situations) and many of her photos are amazing because either a) she’s photographing celebrities or b) she happens to be in a location that is breathtaking, poor, etc. It just doesn’t seem like raw, natural talent to me.

Her earlier work is way better than what she does now. She should just sell some of her photos. Why does she need a loan? Duurrrr….
