Struggling Glossy Mags Look To Hulu For Salvation
With the shocking and depressing news that Conde Nast shuttered not one, but four magazines yesterday—Gourmet and Cookie, plus two bridal magazines—comes the harsh realization that glossies are not what they used to be. If a powerhouse like Conde is suffering, well, you know it’s bad.
But certainly this can’t mean the end of magazines everywhere? Enter the online salvation. Domino recently (sort of) revived itself, in the form of an online rag called Lonny, and now it seems publishing giant Time Inc. is sniffing around the Hulu format. Wait, huh?
With the proposed plan, readers will have the ability to download magazines straight to an iPhone, Blackberry, or Kindle via an iTunes-like system. Purchase, download, read: easy as that. Now the only question is, will editors who are so used to a print format be able to translate their ideas online?
For me (a magazine addict with a major hoarding problem), this new venture means moving will be a whole lot less expensive, but I know I’ll be sad about the lack of glossy pages in my life. You? [Mashable]

I love magazines, but I also love “free,” so these days, I get my fashion, travel, and gossip infusions from blogs and sites like this one. As much as a girl likes her glossy pages, I enjoy the convenience of the internet. If they try to make people pay for the mags, I think they will still lose sales in this economic climate.

For the sake of convenience (instead of ripping out the page from the mag, to show my stylist *the* right shade of caramel, just show her my phone), I understand the appeal of a downloaded mag. But I’d miss the rush of peeking in my mailbox, seeing my Glamour wrapped up in clear plastic, ripping to get to the freshly printed magazine, and holding the front and back cover and shaking it over my trash can to get rid of those annoying renewal cards!
