This is me, in the glasses I bought at Costco three years ago. I normally wear contacts, at least out and about, but at home I rock the glasses. Recently, someone saw me in them and said, “1997 called and wants its glasses back,” which, while harsh, got me thinking that it might be time to update my spectacles, perhaps with a pair cool and distinctive enough that I would wear them in public more often. I really want something nerdyish but still slightly femme. Here are nine rather sexy librarian-esque options. (Prices are for frames, not including the cost of lenses.)

I don’t know Amelia, those look like they will be dated in a season, aside from looking essentially the same.

I’ve always liked women in glasses. You look great. You should wear them while out and about more often.

I agree with calenia above…and would add that glasses, unless you’re dedicated to replacing them every year as fashion and your eye doctor would suggest, should be chosen to suit your face and your overall style rather than a trend. How about some super-cute styles that also won’t become the sore object of buyer’s remorse once they’re outta style?

The only ones I’d rule out immediately are the Selima Optiques. They look like shop goggles. However, if you tend to do a lot of woodworking and hammering*, maybe they’re appropriate. Otherwise, I’d steer clear.
As far as the others go, I agree with almostleslie in that you need to find a style suitable to your face. From what I’ve seen, and without going Full Stalker and trying to Photoshop frames onto your face, I think the dark frames and “flatter” (wider than tall) lenses work for you. Still, the best thing is to take a female (or gay) friend and a non-gay guy with you to look. One will make sure you look good, and the other will make sure you look hot. If you find a pair they both like, you’ve found a winner.
Also, even though maybe only 1-5% of frames will look awesome on you, that still means there are many, many frames will look awesome on you. If you find a pair you really like, get them after maybe a little more shopping, and don’t keep looking forever. You’ll look good in whatever you get.
Depending on your insurance, you might also be able to get a “cheap” frame and lenses for very little if anything. If so, it’s always good to have a spare pair with the right prescription around.
What I really think you need to do, though, is live-blog with photos as you shop.
* I swear, that wasn’t meant to sound dirty.

Yuck on most of these glasses, I like the glasses you have now! But I suppose 1203 are the only ones I really like.

I LOVE the “sexy librarian” look. Maybe that’s because I’ve worn glasses since I was 15 (that was a long, very long, time ago), and from other photos on the site in recent months, I’d say you’re certainly worth a normal male’s interest. In your case, the right glasses send that irresistible message of “I’m smart” and “I’m hot” at the same time. For me, that’s a definite “Yowza!”
Frankly, I don’t care who you shop with – gay, straight, male, female, but yes, take a companion who loves you (in a non-carnal way), and whose judgment you trust, and spend a little time shopping for some new frames if an update is what you want. Personally, I don’t like #3 or #9, but I’m not in your dating pool anyway, so what I like doesn’t make a lot of difference. It’s what YOU like that counts.

I totally love rocking the glasses look. I set aside my flex spending amount in my health insurance for a new pair every year. I am not a viable candidate for laser eye surgery and have made funky, cute, serious, sophisticated, freaky, interesting, space age, trendy, classic or modern glasses part of my look. I always take someone incredibly honest with me when I buy my new glasses AND since I can’t wear contacts, she takes her digital camera and takes pictures of me trying on frames so I can see them too! We compare, contrast, post on facebook, allow others to comment and vote. It’s an event (that’s usually followed by merlot!)...

Maybe 7, but I think you need to compare them to one another while you’re trying them on.

um, is it just me, or are those glasses all extremely expensive? Ive never paid more than 50 dollars and mine are great.

@CaleeKay: I don’t think the prices are out of line at all. Some are pretty steep, but they’re not that far out of the ordinary. Plus, those are full retail prices.
I think my latest ones were $250, but the ones before that were $400 something, and the ones before those were even more expensive.
So, hey, maybe the next ones I get will be $50.

I don’t think they are that out of line either. The glasses I have on right now are Coach. The frames were about $250, and then (since I’m “blind as a bat”) with the compressed lenses, not reflecting surfaces…I think they were about $500 total. Kind of normal.

oh wow, i didnt know they were that expensive. But im not one to buy the fanciest, i make do with them as long as they are cute and work right.
plus, i dont need them all that often, so maybe its not important to me.

Well, I live in them and also have astigmatism. In fact..it’s amazing that they let me drive. LOL. So, with the lense compression, non reflective surface, and the astigmatism - that is $250 (at least) just in lenses. Then there’s the frames…

I’ve always liked women who wear glasses, but am torn as to whether fashion should rule or not. Case in point: Today’s chunky frames are way cool, and cat’s eye frames of the 50’s and 60’s were cool if the right person wore them. However, the big frames of the seventies, a la Tootsie or 9 to 5, were horrible. Like AMC Pacers for your face.

I love my Oliver Peoples glasses. They do a really excellent job of incorporating trends with a classically elegant restraint. So worth the money. I miss my eye insurance. Le sigh. Now I’m off to write a missed connection to my ex’s company and their domestic partner benefits.

If you live in NYC, Fabulous Fanny’s on 9th St. between 2nd and 3rd is the place to go for glasses & sunglasses if you are into vintage. AMAZING SELECTION! I use to shop them when they were a stand in the Chelsea Flea market and got all my glasses from there for years, they are amazing! I think they have a website too, fabulous fannies or fanny’s.

You look cute in glasses, those people are such haters. I bought mine at Costco too! My frames were 60 bucks, suckers! You have to renew your prescription every year, so why spend more than 400 on glasses people! Mine are quite nerdy, Like _jsw_ mentioned, they don’t look like shop goggles, but they DO look like mini lab goggles, the ones shaped like glasses (not the full on clear goggles) they are black rimmed at the top and clear at the bottom. I dont even know what brand they are, something cheap. I too wear contacts most of the time, but I’ve been getting serious pink eye lately so I need to lay off the contacts for a while.

Ooo. Great Post Amelia.
I’ve worn glasses since I was five. BEGGED for the contacts at age 12 then switched back to glasses 20 years later.
They add instant credibility and people always remember you as “the girl with the glasses.”
However, I never feel sexy in them. I take mine off in bars or on dates, which isn’t such a good idea because I can’t really see what the guys look like!
I would love to get lasik and have a pair of specs as fashion only.
I like to look at my face in the mirror without my glasses. No pores, blemishes or lines.
I am so delusional.

I’m a dual person - rigid contacts most days and glasses in the morning/night. Even with such minimal use I still want to be able to go to Walgreens to get anti-plague medicine in them without guaranteed emabarassment, so I do put a little effort in. Plus, my s/o loves the pencil in the hair glasses poring over a book look I get while studying/reading…
Lenses are never less than $250 for me (blind, check!)
and decent frames are 50-200 depending on what you want… My last pair set me back around $400 and the “fabulously homosexual” (his words) glasses technician at LensCrafters was a big help.
I think the trick is to get something that is flattering and well-made, especially if you’re only going to have 1-2 pairs.

@bentoy: Oh yeah, because Amelia saying “im ashamed that i WOULD screw Nick Jonas [hypothetically]” is totally the same as saying “Im gonna give this kid a quaalude and butt rape him” Perfectly logical.
As to the glasses Amelia, I love the ones you’re rocking now! But thats prob because they are very similar to mine. Of your new choices, my faves are the 1203. Really faves. Like, I might need them.

I am an optician. So, my job has me look at frame fashion trends, and how they may work on different face shapes. I think these are great choices for most shapes, but whoever wears them needs to be comfortable enough in them. I think the best thing a person can do is choose a fun pair of frames and rock them, make them part of your style. Personally, there is nothing better than a compliment on my glasses, especially if I find myself at a bar. I love that people notice them. Glasses shouldn’t just be for the night time, and sick days.

From what I can see, I don’t like any of those more than the ones you’ve already got. Then again, I’m still rocking the Guccis I bought seven years ago, so I may not be the best judge.
But the clear frames remind me of Mitch from the movie Real Genius. Not good.

Your glasses look good on you! They’re fine. However, if you really feel like upgrading, why not? Just don’t throw those frames away in case you change your mind
