5 Ways To Get Gorgeous With Olive Oil

I used to work with this super elegant, gorgeous, older woman stylist who happened to be Italian, and during the wee hours of one particularly long shoot, I asked her what was the secret to her native countrywomens’ longevity. She didn’t hesitate: “Olive oil,” she replied. One of the greatest beauty icons of all time, Sophia Loren, concurs. She attributes her stunning 75-year-old good looks to “a love of life, spaghetti, and the odd bath in virgin olive oil.” [Celebrity Health & Fitness]
Ingesting the stuff is one thing—it’s loaded with healthy monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. But there are plenty of more superficial benefits as well. Here’s how to work a bit of olive oil into your beauty regimen.
- If you ask me, the idea of taking a bath in olive oil sounds a little McCrazytown, but I have heard that you can apply some extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil to your face (caution re: the eye area), and remove any excess after ten minutes for an anti-aging mask.
- Olive oil also works wonders on dry hair, but I would warn that it’s best on thick hair, as it tends to cling on even after you’ve washed it out. Apply to clean hair and wrap in a warmed towel, then allow to sit for 20 minutes and rinse well. Like, really well.
- You know that Vaseline trick where you put it on your feet, cover them with cotton socks and wear to bed for super soft tootsies in the morning? You can totally do that with olive oil.
- Ditto for cuticles. While you can buy cool but expensive oil products especially labeled for your hands and nails, the stuff you use to cook with works just as well.
- You’ve heard that people make body scrubs out of sugar and salt, right? By mixing such ingredients with olive oil, you get the same exfoliating benefits, but your skin will feel all silky and conditioned after as well.
Got any other ideas? Lay ‘em on us.

My mother always told me to rub olive oil on my lips in dry weather or when the heat is cranked, especially before bed. It keeps your lips from cracking and chapping- just use it sparingly, a little really goes a long way. It's also great for dishpan/cracked hands... just like the sock trick above, do it overnight with some cheap gloves.

This is the truth- I'm Italian, and I have a bottle of extra virgin next to the tub. I live in a cold climate, and at least once a week I use the OO as an after-bath oil- otherwise the winter weather tears my skin UP. A couple drops in the water, or a skim on the ends of my hair or elbows- my face- it helps with all of that. BUT! it is tough to get out of your hair if you glop it on. My hair is thick and coarse, but I wouldn't use it on finer hair.

It makes a really great face wash for oily and combination skin. Sounds counterintuitive, but it doesn't strip the natural oils and helps to soothe redness and dryness.Oh and the sugar/salt and olive oil scrub works wonders. I haven't tried it with lemon juice but I've added rosemary, essential oils, honey, milk and orange peel to it (not all together, but separately) and really love how it makes my skin feel.

I LOVE olive oil. I use it for everything. In the winter I'm out in the cold riding most all of the day, so I try to take a bath with olive oil a few times a week, I'm pretty sure my skin would crumble to the floor if I didn't. I also use it for my hair, face, and as an eye make-up remover (just don't get it IN your eye, that killlls)

I use it on my legs after having occasionally. It doesn't sting or burn my sensitive skin.

@So Sly- I've heard good things about washing the face with it, I was afraid to try. But I trust a fellow Frisky-er not to lie to me. :P

Yay for olive oil getting good press! I use it for everything - washing my face, make up remover, whole body moisturizer, bath oil, in body scrubs, and for chapped lips. I'm a total olive oil apologist!

Another good one is Burt's Bees apricot baby oil. I used to use it on my legs a couple times a week when I would get out of the shower. And it smells amazing!

@moonblossom: that SOUNDS amazing! I want. I'm a big baby oil lover, I use that for most of the things mentioned here for olive oil! The Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil Gel is pretty amazing and wayyyy less messy.
