3-D TVs Coming To Your Home By ... Next Year
Just when I’ve finally figured out what each and every button on my flatscreen TV’s remote control does, electronics companies are ready to sell me the next must-have boob tube incarnation: 3-D TV. Both Sony and Panasonic have announced that they will be releasing 3-D TVs in 2010, and Mitsubishi and JVC are working on them too. Yes, these new sets will involve wearing goofy 3-D glasses and lord knows what they’ll cost, but does this pique your interest? [CNN]

actually Mitsubishi already has a model out with the 3-D setting, it’s a 73” HDTV so its definately not cheap. Also I’ve already been able to find a couple 3-D offerings OnDemand… haven’t tested it out yet

Its awesome to think what we’ll be watching in 20 years from now. But for the time being, I wouldn’t buy the 3D tv, mostly for the fact that its going to be way to expensive, and have glitches and bugs for the first few years. I also doubt the picture will be as nice as a 1080P HD tv with all the right hook-ups. Someday I think we’ll be pretty much IN our favorite tv show or movie. So the tv must come with 2, maybe 4 pairs of 3D glasses? What if you have a bunch of people over for the game, they all have to have a pair, so how much will extras cost? On top of that, the lenses will get scratched, and sat on or lost. But until its a bit more cheap, and no doubts about the picture quality, I’ll stick with the now-old-fashioned 1080P tv up on the wall. I’m a happy camper (:

My friend just got a Samsung plasma tv (free from her brother, but retails for around US$ 600) that is actually 3D ready… so this tech is here now… but in my opinion - this active 3D requiring glasses of some sort is not the revolution - it’s the screens that don’t require glasses, using lenticular lenses ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_lens ) that will usher in the real 3D experience we all have been waiting for.
There have been great strides made in this area - and the consumer technology to digitally capture and view this type of 3D imagery is just about here - slated for fall 2009 release in the US and already available in japan - is FujiFilm’s Real 3D system ( http://www.fujifilm.com/products/3d/camera/finepix_real3dw1/ ). But AffluentBlue is quite right to point out - this stuff won’t look as crystal clear as your 1080p HD anytime soon. To make a different image appear in each eye (stereoscopy) and give you the 3D effect the lenticular lens slices up the image in have through interlacing - effectively reducing the detail to half.
Still, it will be pretty fun to see what 3D YouTube will look like. ( http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/07/youtube-3d.html ). Not to mention, of course this will trickle into the adult entertainment industry.
