“16 And Pregnant” Teens Struggle To Give Their Baby Up For Adoption

MTV‘s “16 and Pregnant” was a hot mess last night. Catelynn and Tyler are really sweet, smart, loving, mature kids who want the best for their baby, but their mom and pops are pretty screwed up. Mom is a drunk driver; Tyler’s dad is an ex-con. And, their parents are married. Yeah, Catelynn and Tyler are boyfriend and girlfriend, soon-to-be teen parents—and step-siblings. Wait, is this “Jerry Springer”?

Watch the kids tell their parents their choice is to give their daughter up for adoption because they both want to go to college—and how their parents try to convince them to raise their baby in this bats**t family instead. [MTV]

He didn’t man-up? Are you kidding me? The kid is “manning up” by admitting he isn’t capable of raising a kid. Someone needs to kick his father right in the balls.

...and headbutted. That kids father defiantly needs to be headbutted.

It’s amazing how mature Ty and Catelynn are about the whole thing. I actually watched the episode (damn you MTV for sucking me into an ethically questionable show!) and they do give up the baby for adoption, BUT her mom wouldn’t sign the papers becuase apparently wherever they live Catelynn needed parental consent to have the “hand-off” be in the hospital. (WTF to THAT policy and/or law), so poor Catelynn had to be wheeled out to the edge of hospital grounds while holding her baby just hours after giving birth, and then WALK (with Ty) a block down the steet to the parking lot and do the “hand-off” with the adoptive parents there. I started crying.  And her mom was still pissed days later, but Catelynn said that she knew she was doing the right thing, that she’s at peace with her decision and that someday maybe she and Ty can have a family together when the time’s right.

I’m sooo not for teen pregnancy, but I’m even less for teen parents. These kids really showed maturity in such a sucky situation.  It absolutely APPALED me that both of their parents were so unsupportive of the idea of adoption. They acted like it was giving away money or something!  Ugh. I give props to those kids for doing what was best for their daughter and for themselves.

i never cry during movies or TV, but i lost it when Teresa gave Catelynn their matching charm bracelets.  i’ve been watching the show on and off all season, and Catelynn and Tyler are the most mature and responsible teens i have seen yet.  choosing adoption was obviously a difficult decision (not to mention selfless), and they took the hard road by making it.  they will be wonderful parents when their time is right.  but for the life of me, i cannot figure out how they came out of such unsupportive parents.

I saw the show. Thought the kids were great. They made such a tough choice. The parents were d-bags for sure. Those two kids made such a mature, reasoned decision. Their parents should have had the decency to support them…even if they didn’t agree 100%

It is probably the hospital’s policy re: the off-site handoff since the kid (mom) was a minor when she gave birth. If it was the law then I’m assuming the location would not have mattered.

I did see an upcoming reunion show advertised. I haven’t followed the series, but after seeing this episode I really want to see the reunion. Looks like the adoptive parents show up. I’m sure I’ll cry. I always do on shows like that grin

WOW. I only caught the last little bit of the show last night, I didn’t realize they were step-siblings… Ugh. I agree with the statement: I am sooo not for teen pregnancy, but I’m even less for teen parents. I believe that these kids who decide to go out and get a job to support their baby mama and baby are noble, but in the long run, it’s going to hurt baby mama, baby daddy, and baby… There are so many other options and so many people who can’t have children that would love to have a child to love and hold… These teen parents scare me a little. It’s almost acceptable now to be a teen mother.

Why do bats**t crazy people responsible for broken homes always want to add more babies to the mix?! Augh!

I’ve been following this series just to see how they’re portraying teen preganancy, and I wasn’t impressed until this episode.  These kids are 16-17 years old, and they’re already more mature than their parents.  It was remarkable to watch such young kids make such a brave decision, to do what is best for their child, not just for themselves.

and p.s. - Butch and April are idiots.  I can’t believe he told his son to “cowboy up”!  Ugh…

Butch to Tyler: “You aren’t the cowboy I thought you were son!  A real cowboy would put on his boots, saddle up, throw that baby on his back and ride off into the sunset on his trusty steed with his little mama by his side! I can’t believe you are making such a Yankee decision like givin this baby to a good family!” raspberry

Well as the saying goes you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.

I feel this was a smart move for the baby girl to have a chance with a stable home that doesn’t have convicts and drunk drivers as grand parents.

I watched this show today and actually cried during the end of it. I agree 100% that the parents were absolute idiots, and I thought the kids were extremely mature. My moment of anger was when the Grandmom, the girls mom, wouldn’t sign the paperwork and the poor girl had to walk. My LOL my moment was when Tyler’s friend asked him if he used protection and he said yeah that he washed the condoms out… LOL

I didn’t see this whole episode, but I wanted to cry when Tyler’s dad told him to man up, etc, at the start of the show. That child is better off in a different life, and I’ amazed that both kids had the sense and maturity to realize that and to fight for their unborn child. It was a very sobering moment

I agree with what everyone’s saying and would just like to add that I cried during almost this whole show.

I nearly puke during pregnancy shows really and just cringe in horror.
But then I cry like a baby over adoption stories.

So I guess it’s just appropriate that one day I want to adopt kids. It was just amazing to see this story and think of how selfless those kids were. To see their anguish and heartbreak.

I’m just so glad though that they said that they got stronger through this. At least something good came out of it and they didn’t lose each other.
