10 Rules About The Way Men And Women Eat
Esquire.com recently posted a “personal catalog” of 30 “likes, dislikes, habits, and rules” about the way men eat. I haven’t thought much about it before, but looking at this list, I suddenly realize that men and women are practically opposites when it comes to mealtime. After the jump, 10 habits and rules for men from Esquire, plus our own personal catalog of 10 likes, dislikes, habits, and rules about the way women eat.
Esquire’s Personal Catalog of Men’s Eating Habits
- A plate of salami can be a meal, if it’s what’s there. You look around. Fried eggs over tortilla chips. Hunger spurs creativity in a man.
- I’ll dip just about anything in just about anything — something from the fridge, something at the other end of the table. Fried chicken in the guacamole. A slice of pizza in the tub of take-out ranch. Whatever’s in front of me.
- If I love the waitress, I tell her to bring me whatever’s good. This has afforded me many discoveries.
- I would rather wait till dinner than have brunch.
- A man doesn’t need more bread. More chips maybe, but not more bread.
- You can cook a good meal in the time it takes to drink one cocktail.
- A beer with lunch can be transformative.
- I don’t particularly enjoy sharing. Except with a woman, and then only on the first two dates or any wedding anniversary after the tenth.
- There are few greater joys than eating a Cinnabon and drinking coffee while parked, alone, at the Walt Whitman Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike on a cold morning.
- Eating while walking, no. While driving, yes.
The Frisky’s Personal Catalog Of Women’s Eating Habits
- A box of Wheat Thins, a few baby carrots and some cream cheese can be a meal if that’s what’s there.
- Women will dip just about anything into cheese (see above) — a hunk of bread, some grape tomatoes, a piece of pizza, or a slice of apple.
- If we love the bartender, we tell him to make us his specialty. This has afforded us a few good drinks ... and many hot dates.
- I would rather skip every other meal of the day to have brunch.
- There is no such thing as too much bread.
- Sometimes a cocktail is a meal.
- A beer with lunch can be transformative (ah, something we agree on!).
- We’ll share our salad if you share your fries!
- There are few greater joys in life than sipping a latte on a Sunday morning while eating a lightly toasted whole wheat bagel with veggie cream cheese and reading the New York Times Style section.
- Eating while walking, no. Eating while having sex, maybe.

Men don’t share? pft. My bf and I split pretty much every dinner date we had for the first year or so ... ESPECIALLY with sushi. We order a big sashimi platter and a roll or two and share every single item. If we weren’t impressed by the selections on the prix fixe menu (or just missed its availability re: valentine’s day?), just make up our own and share everything. Then again, we’re both very much foodies and sharing is a big part of enjoying a meal out. I’m so glad my bf isn’t into the junk/gross food, though I’m sure a lot of guys are way more refined than this list would suggest. Way to go Esquire.

Holy crap, I’ve actually done that.

@CheeeeEEEEse me too! I <3 the Walt Whitman Service Area.
I love these lists. And totally agree about Brunch…I need no other meal. Ever. Same with cocktails

Ah, Wendy numbers 5 and 6 together- bread and cocktails- have been my dinner many nights. Ooh, and coffee. Since I’ve had to switch properties where I work, I’ve lost weight since those three items are no longer part of my daily regimen.

I too share almost every meal out with my boyfriend. We’re both foodies and love trying new things, so we always have a bite of each others’ food. And sushi sharing is a MUST.

My husband and I share everything and he wouldn’t dip his food into anything, but everthing is pretty much on the money.

I think the list for women is a bit off. All women do not eat like birds. And “eating while having sex”??? Gross!

Nobody tells me how to eat!!! That’s the only rule that matters. Just this very day I ate a sandwich while walking. Multitasking!
Men’s eating rule #3 - Never eat blind. What if she brings me something I just don’t like?
Men’s eating rule #4 is trumped by Men’s living rule #2 - Eat whenever you’re hungry.
Men’s/Women’s rule #8 - What exactly is sharing? “Can I try that?” isn’t sharing, it’s tasting. But “We’ll share our salad if you share your fries”? That’s not sharing either, that’s robbery.

I don’t know about the whole brunch thing. Not too important. But a nice big breakfast with Hubby and the kids on a Sunday morning while watching football? That is money.

haha. Wow I must eat like a man… The second rule totally applies to me the most though… I like sauces/dips on all my foods.

@kai29- you’re right, not all women eat like birds. I’m one of those women. I when I’m hungry, I eat like a truck driver. I think we’re all guilty of the cinnabon thing. yumm!! (drool)

Man. There really can never be too much bread. I went with my dad to eat lunch at Red Lobster and I gorged myself on their utterly amazing biscuits.

Jeez, I eat like a man, it seems.
And I absolutely despise brunch.
Rules #2 and #10 on the guy side don’t apply to me, but only #8 for the gals is something I do. Interesting.

@Lostinstars-those Red Lobster biscuits can almost be a meal by themselves. They are the only reason i go since Red Lobster doesnt have a catfish fillet!

Seriously, what’s the deal with brunch? I couldn’t care less about it, but if someone brings me food at “brunch time”, I’m not going to complain. If someone brings me a lot of cocktails, I might even go to brunch on purpose.

I don’t get brunch either. If I have to wait until 11 AM to eat, I want meat or fish, not eggs. And if I have to eat at 8 AM, I can’t do fish or meat, it needs to be eggs; though I’d prefer pancakes but don’t eat them because they go straight to my @$$.

I do not share salad. If you reach for my salad, I will fork your hand.
I don’t do lattes, either. Doesn’t anyone else just drink regular coffee any more?

#8 for men reminds me of an episode of “Friends”: “Joey doesn’t share food!”
My fiance doesn’t mind sharing. However, I usually wind up giving him whatever I don’t finish because the dude is like a bottomless pit. I don’t know where it all goes, though, because he never gains any weight! Damn his quick metabolism…

None of these particularly pertain to me, but for #9 for women, swap “latte” for “foamy hot chocolate with whipped cream” and “a lightly toasted whole wheat bagel with veggie cream cheese” with “a lightly toasted Asiago cheese bagel with smoked salmon cream cheese” and I’d be all over that like white on rice. Especially if I get to laze around in my PJs and my fluffy super-soft robe while doing it.

I can eat chutney with anything. Do you americans have chutney? Not sure. Anyway, it’s a sort of savoury vegetable jam, usually eaten with cold meats or cheese here in the UK but I would/can eat it with EVERYTHING. Maybe not breakfast cereal, but apart from that, chutney me the hell up.
