Beyonce’s “Love On Top” Video Is Hardly A New Edition

First of all, does Beyonce release a new music video every week? Just last week, she debuted the video for “Countdown,” yet this week, she has a new video for the song “Love On Top” — what happened to building suspense? Anyway, Beyonce can’t do anything without paying homage to someone, and this video is no different. Her inspiration comes from a somewhat unlikely place — ’80s boy band New Edition, which was of course fronted by a wee Bobby Brown. “Love On Top” is directly inspired by their video for “If It Isn’t Love,” from the setting (a sun-lit loft space!) to the dance moves. Somewhere out there Whitney Houston is saying “Oh, hell to the no!”

Playing Games With Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey, whose EP Video Games was released this week, has caused a bit of a stir on the Internet since the single — also called “Video Games” — gained momentum over the summer by way of MP3 blogs. She initially performed under her real name, Lizzy Grant, before adopting a very stylized new look at the recommendation of managers and lawyers. Before her revamp (surgical or otherwise — who’s to say?) her career was hardly on the up and up. It’s only since then that she’s risen to notoriety. But whatever! All controversy aside,  Lana Del Rey rules and it definitely doesn’t hurt that she looks like Brigitte Bardot circa Le Mepris. “Video Games” deserves every bit of press it’s received, and my boyfriend kindly requested that I not play it again after listening to it on repeat for several days. It’s that good.

Paul McCartney famously sang, “Will you still love me when I’m 64?” Well, he’s technically 69, but 51-year-old Nancy Shevell just answered “I do!” McCartney married his third wife this weekend in London following four years of courtship. “I feel married,”  McCartney told reporters after the ceremony. “I feel absolutely wonderful.” Aww, cute. After losing first wife Linda to cancer in 1998, McCartney had a tumultuous second marriage to Heather Mills, with whom he has a daughter, Beatrice (she served as flower girl!). Shevell and McCartney met in 2007 and the two became engaged in May. So, who is this woman feeling up on our favorite Beatle? The goods are after the jump … Keep reading »

Men At Work Sued For Plagiarism, 28 Years Too Late

Watch Video

According to the High Court of Australia, the band Men at Work got famous by stealing another’s work. Two years ago, the band was sued for copyright infringement by a company called Larrikin Music. Larrikin claims that the flute riff that is the backbone to the band’s hit, “Down Under,” was stolen from a popular kid’s song called “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.” The song was written more than 70 years ago by a teacher named Marion Sinclair, who passed away in 1988. While Sinclair didn’t made a stink about the likeness when he was alive, now that Larrikin Music owns the rights to his song, they decided to bring the case to court. As the victors, they will be able to seek royalties made on the song from 2002 on. Only someone should probably tell them that this song was the height of popularity …  in 1983. They kind of missed the boat on this one. [Huffington Post]

Mates Of State Brings Their Daughters On The Road

Mates of State is a band composed of two people—Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner—who happen to be married. And their upbeat, clap-able tunes make marriage sound really, really fun. But things got complicated for the couple when they had their first daughter, Magnolia, four years ago and even more complicated two years later, when they had a second daughter, June. But they didn’t let having kids stop their days of making music and touring—nope, they decided to bring the girls on the road with them. And in their rider, they stipulate that venues provide “surprises for a 2-year-old and surprises for a 4-year-old.” Kori and Jason say people have taken this very, very seriously.

“Close your eyes, give me your hand … darling. Do you feel my heart beating?”

Earlier this week, I found myself swaying back and forth, a glass of Prosecco in my hand, belting out the lyrics to The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame,” my favorite song circa 1988. I was 8 years old when the tune came out and, at the time, it seemed far more important that I learn to tease my hair a la front woman Susanna Hoffs than study my multiplication tables for third grade math. I put even more effort into memorizing the lyrics to “Walk Like An Egyptian.” The song remains my karaoke standard to this day.

As I looked around the packed club at the large number of iPhones being held in the air, capturing the moment on video, it occurred to me that “Eternal Flame,” a song that had sounded so deep to me as a kid, was actually kind of trite. But I pushed the thought from my mind. I wasn’t hear to evaluate the artistic merit of the music I had loved when I was younger—I was here simply to revel in the fact that I had loved it. As the song ended, Susanna took a moment to address the crowd with some heartfelt words. “It’s the 30th anniversary of The Bangles,” she said. “All the love you’ve given to us, we want to give back to you.”

I jumped up and down, clapping wildly. And something occurred to me—I realized that I am a reunion tour junkie.

In her video for “Countdown,” Beyonce has basically produced the most GIF-able tribute ever to Audrey Hepburn, Tina Turner, Jennifer Beals, Mary Quant and everyone in between. No, like, seriously. There are so many costume changes, herky-jerky shoulder thrusts, and fluttering eyelashes, I am almost dizzy. And I like it!

Lady Gaga News: A Lifetime Movie And An Invitation To Join Queen?

We love a good Lifetime movie as much as the next girl. No seriously, we’ve watched “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?” more times collectively than we’d wish to confess. But we’re a little skeptical of a new flick that Lifetime has in the works called “Fame Monster: The Lady Gaga Story.” The network has put out a casting call looking for actresses “who can believably span ages of 16 to 22″ for the role. But will they really be able to find someone to walk in Gaga’s (Alexander McQueen Armadillo) shoes?

This information comes at the same time as news that Lady Gaga is apparently being courted to become the lead singer of Queen.

Were you lucky enough to nab tickets to see Adele this month? Well, I’m very sorry to report that her upcoming 10-city US tour has been cancelled thanks to a vocal chord hemorrhage. “Singing is literally my life—it’s my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job,” Adele wrote, explaining her rationale for canceling her dates along the East Coast and in the South for the second time. “I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or i risk damaging my voice forever … I have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously i take it and how truly devastated and annoyed i am by this.” [Gossip Cop]

So will Adele reschedule these dates? Or are we just out in the cold? We look to recent history for some answers. Keep reading »

Kat Von D Recording An Album

“I’ve been passionate about music all my life. I’ve been playing classical piano since I was six. So I understand the form, but it will be fun to be able to translate a message. It’ll be more on the dark, more tragically romantic [side]  …  I think it’s much like tattooing or the TV show or makeup, my clothing line, fashion. All those things, they’re just different outlets to be able to be creative. So music, I think it’s going to be one of those things.”

Kat Von D tells E! News that, in the wake of the cancellation of “LA Ink,” she will be recording an album. Apparently last month, she sang “November Rain” during Fashion Week? This could either be a trainwreck in progress, or total genius. [NY Daily News]
