Meet Kim Petras, The First Transgender Pop Singer

Kim Petras, a German teen whose name used to be Tim, says she always knew she was meant to be a girl. Her parents let her undergo genital reassignment surgery last year after she turned 16. Now she’s completely focused on her musical career, which might not last long if her song “Die for You” is any indication because it’s totes crappy. Hopefully, all this coverage she’s getting for being transgendered will get the attention of a top music producer who can help her develop a more unique and interesting sound. New Bat for Lashes Video: Daniel

A new video arrives from Bat for Lashes: “Daniel.” Directed by Johan Renck, who’s directed videos for Madonna and Kylie Minogue, it’s sort of in the same surreal vein as “What’s a Girl to Do?” A little bit Stevie Nicks, a little bit Bjork, the melancholy music vid stars Natasha Khan in tear-streaked makeup getting molested by a pack of black-clad freaks who look like they just escaped from an insane asylum in which everyone is forced to wear Gareth Pugh. It’s a pretty, sad love song — although why it ends with a Karate Kid reunion, I cannot fathom. The track is the first cut released from the upcoming Bat album, Two Suns. Do you love it or hate it? Shout out in the comments. Keep reading »

The Ultimate Love Song Mash Up

This audio mash up is pretty sweet — a Vimeo user took 32 songs which have “love” in the title and mashed them together into one 6:32 minute long song. Shockingly, it’s not even remotely cheesy! Listen above and view the track list here. [Via Buzzfeed] Keep reading »

    The Frisky’s Five Worst Duets

This weekend, the new James Bond movie, “Quantum of Solace,” opened. We’ve already been raving about the spy’s new lady, Olga Kurylenko, but now we want to rant a little about the theme song. Jack White and Alicia Keyes are both totally awesome in their own right. Jack is the hottest guitar licker of his generation and Alicia’s been kickin’ butt on keyboards since she was a teen. Yet, somehow, when they sing together on the new Bond theme, “Another Way To Die,” it’s like nails on a chalkboard. For the record, the track is hot! It’s just the vocal combo in the chorus that will stop the song from being as big a hit as the movie. Alas, sometimes, two heads just aren’t better than one. But don’t worry, Jack and Alicia, there are duets far, far worse than yours by artists of the highest caliber. So, in honor of those terrible twosomes, here are The Frisky’s Five Worst Duets, after the jump…

    Video Debut: Britney Spears “Womanizer”

The video debuted tonight on “20/20″ and aside from the annoying, weird limo driver scene towards the end, I like it! I missed Britney y’all. I really did. Even though I thought it was bad ass when she shaved her head, I’m glad her hair has grown back and her meds have kicked in and she seems all calm. And I’m glad that despite the ups and down, Brit still manages to make music that makes me want to dance around my apartment in my underwear. Keep reading »

Sweet Release: What’s In And Out The Week Of July 8th 2008

    MUSIC

  • Albert Hammond Jr.Como Te Llama?
Albert Hammond Jr. releases his second record sans the Strokes — Como Te Llama?, or, “What’s Your Name?” in Spanish. If you didn’t already know the guitar hero’s name, you won’t forget him and his sonic lovin’ after this record. Softer, sweeter, and joyous (especially for a hipster), Hammond has laid down beautiful tracks with his band, which features a member of another popular NYU group, Marc Phillipe from the defunct Sexy Magazines. While we are all waiting for the Strokes’ record #4, if Hammond is going to go off and make songs on his own like this, at least the hold music rocks.

Top Eight Music Videos Featuring Sweet Dance Moves

    1. Janet Jackson, “If” You may be saying to yourself, “Wait, why not ‘Rhythm Nation’?” Because everyone assumes that “Rhythm Nation” is Janet’s best dance video, but it’s not. “If” is much dirtier. See for yourself.

Mash-Up: Miss Piggy Learns The Teaches Of Peaches

Let me just start this post off by saying that you should probably listen to the above video with your headphones on if you’re at home or in the company of small, impressionable children, especially ones that enjoy The Muppet Show. Behold, one of the greatest video dubs ever — Miss Piggy and the rest of her crew rocking out to the splendid Peaches’ tune “F*ck The Pain Away”. Kermit has never felt such a mighty lust coming his way. Keep reading »
