Mariah Carey Revisits The ’80s On “Today”

Mariah Carey visited “Today” this morning to promote her just-released album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. She even brought along her own crystal-encrusted microphone and mic stand, as only a true diva does. Listen to her piercing high notes (and watch the accompanying hand gestures) in the video above. She sings the 1984 classic “I Want to Know What Love Is” with a children’s choir. [Today] Keep reading »

Chris Brown Releases “I Can Transform Ya”

Chris Brown has released his first single since assaulting Rihanna in February. “I Can Transform Ya” features Lil Wayne and Swizz Beats, who produced the track. You can hear it in the video above, but skip to 2:17 if you don’t want to hear Chris try to figure out how to work his computer. “I Can Transform Ya” sounds like the man’s version of Beyonce‘s “Upgrade U” on B’Day. Even though his version is rather late — “Upgrade U” was released in 2006 — I don’t think this should have been his first release after the assault. Each time the hook plays, I think about how he transformed Rihanna’s face. Let us know what you think about the single in the comments. Keep reading »

The Lady Before She Went Gaga

In the same New York City dive bar that broke Bob Dylan, here’s Lady Gaga way back in 2006, performing in—gasp!—normal clothes. Heck, some of the dudes in her backing band look like crunchy granola Phish heads. That ho really has bleached and bedazzled herself to the hilt over the past few years. But this video proves the Lady rocked, even back then, without all the awesome glitter crap.

Coming Soon To A Record Store Near You: John and Mackenzie Phillips Duets!

Holy inappropriate, Batman. It hasn’t even been 24 hours since “One Day at a Time” actress Mackenzie Phillips sat down on Oprah‘s couch and tearfully confessed that she had an incestuous relationship with her dad, John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas’ fame, for more than a decade that culminated in a pregnancy and subsequent abortion. And already, the keeper of John Phillips’ estate, a lawyer named Jeffrey A. Greenberg, has made a strange announcement. No, he hasn’t come out and said anything about the allegations. But he does want us all to know that he’ll be releasing an album of songs recorded by John and Mackenzie Phillips in the ’80s, when John decided to revive the Mamas & the Papas with Mackenzie and a few original bandmates. The album will be called either “Papa John and Friends” or “Many Mamas, Many Papas” and won’t be out until early next year, though Greenberg is looking to release a single soon. “Obviously, [John is] not around now to speak to any of this,” says Greenberg. “People will make up their own minds. I was a huge fan of his and my object is to hopefully make people aware of John’s music and his talent. In a perverse way, I guess, if there is a way to make lemonade out of the lemons, that would be good.” I don’t know, this album sounds pretty exploitative to me. And that photo above kind of turns my stomach. [Entertainment Weekly] Keep reading »

Now that Jay-Z‘s new album, The Blueprint 3, has reached #1 on the Billboard chart, a whole huge deal is being made about how Jay has surpassed Elvis‘ long held record for the most #1 albums. Guess that was definitely worth coming out of retirement for. But, uh, how does Jay-Z stack up to Elvis in other regards?

Watch These Sexy Censor Bars Dance!

This is an oldie but a goodie. In 2008 this video was released by the BPA — or the Brighton Port Authority — a musical project put together by Fatboy Slim. This track is a collaboration between him, David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal, and the video is an amazing example of putting censor bars to good use. Happy Friday! Keep reading »
