Perfume may not be for everyone, but those of us who love it really love it. I have a hyper-sensitive sense of smell — I smell things before anyone else does, and I can often identify them instantly. I can smell a new perfume offhand and rattle off the most dominant notes in it. Many of my childhood memories are steeped in scent, so much so that whenever I catch a whiff of the Yves Saint Laurent Paris perfume my mother wore when I was small, I'm suddenly five years old again.
Being so attuned to scents has its downfalls, especially living in New York City, where there are tons of smells that make me, well, kind of ill. However, one thing that never bothers me is perfume. It doesn't matter what it is (with the exception of Chanel No. 5, which I detest), or if you doused yourself in it and now I'm squished up next to you on the subway. I may be a tale straight out of "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer," but I kind of enjoy smelling peoples' perfumes, especially if they're good ones! That's why I feel strongly about signature scents. I own many perfumes, and I like them all for different times and different reasons, but I believe every woman should have one that's utterly, recognizably hers.
If you don't have this already, there's no better time than now to begin, with my handy guide to choosing your own signature scent. Before deciding on a fragrance, it's always important to actually try it on your own skin. Sephora is a good place to start: spray it on in the store, then walk around, maybe even leave and come back to see how the scent settles. [Sephora Fragrance Finder]
