What Would’ve Happened If These Rom-Com Heroines Had Chosen Themselves Instead Of Prince Charming
Bridget Jones from "Bridget Jones’ Diary" (2001)
What Actually Happened: After a bevy of mistarts and miscommunications, it looks like Mark (Colin Firth) and Bridget (Rene Zellweger) are finally ready to build a life together—until Mark reads some unflattering remarks about him in Bridget’s journal. Worried that she’s lost him forever, she runs around the streets of London in only a sweater and leopard knickers, looking for her beloved barrister. Just when she’s about to give up (and probably catch hypothermia), Mark reappears, Bridget runs to him, the couple embrace, kiss and live happily ever after—at least until the sequel.
What Would’ve Happened: After a failed fling with her boss at the publishing house and a tumultuous non-courtship with Mark Darcy, Bridget decides that she needs to take herself off the dating market in order to repair her heart with something more permanent than cigarettes and vodka. She turns to her best friend Shazzer, who suggests she channel her energy into her budding career on the telly instead of fuckwits who make her feel like shite. More driven than ever, Bridget follows up her highly acclaimed interview with a Kurdish Freedom Fighter and his British aid worker wife with equally astute stories on everything from climate change to J.Lo’s short-lived second marriage. It isn’t long until Bridget is offered a co-presenter job at Sky News Sunrise, making her the Meredith Viera of the United Kingdom.
