A few months later, I moved to Los Angeles, where I kept writing about porn. Going behind the scenes in the adult industry was pretty fascinating. It was like the part in "The Wizard of Oz" when the curtain gets pulled back and you see the wizard. It was like being on the set of a regular Hollywood movie -- only way weirder. I met a lot of porn stars, many of them women. They explained to me that working in porn was empowering, that porn was one of the rare industries in which the women make far more than their male counterparts. When they spoke about their chosen profession, they came across as confident and self-assured. So, I believed them. Sex on screen was no big deal, they said. They loved their jobs, they asserted. This line of work? It was like any other profession. Except, you know, they had sex for a living.
