Oh, how the Victorians loved their gloves. Men were required to wear gloves during courting, too. The idea was that a typical courting visit should last no longer than 15 minutes and the gloves stayed on to show the intention of honoring that speedy time limit. If a woman was receiving a male caller at her house, he was allowed to present her with a gift of flowers, candy or a gift, but was generally prohibited from gifting anything more expensive, as it was considered inappropriate. Also inappropriate: any kind of touching, unless the couple was engaged. And that’s why ice-skating and roller-skating became popular: they were socially acceptable activities that involved touching. So scandalous!
