Those Victorians found a way to suck the fun out of everything, even dancing. Hence, the dance card. Men could sign up for dances with women they liked at the beginning of the evening, and it was considered poor form to have an empty slot on your dance card available. Also poor form: cutting, which is when women occasionally left a guy on their dance card hanging out to dry and refused to dance with him. I'd probably do this.
