Back in 1970, around 100 feminists stormed the offices of "Ladies' Home Journal" magazine and held a sit-in for 11 hours, insisting that more women were actually represented on staff. The magazine was basically staffed by men, believe it or not. (You can read more about this not-well-known bit of women's history here.) Unfortunately, it seems that the news media has not gotten a hell of a lot more diverse since then: Men hold two-thirds of the decision-making positions at news companies worldwide, according to a study by the International Women's Media Foundation. Likewise, the study found that women only hold 41 percent of the news-gathering, editing and writing positions worldwide, as well. It may not look like it on women-centric blogs like The Frisky, but it's not too much of a stretch to say the worldwide mainstream media is filtered through a male-centric lens. No duh: men hold a majority of decision-making positions in the media worldwide, which is a fancy way of saying they have a lot of influence.
