The War of the Worlds
In October 1925, Orson Welles performed a radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds about a fictional alien invasion. It was perceived by many listeners as a real news broadcast, however, sending the public into a panic. People assembled at the reported site of the alien landing, and police had to be called in to calm people down. More than a million people reported believing the War of the Worlds broadcast to be real.Related to: conversion disorder, hysteria, leroy new york, mass hysteria
