In one of the oldest cases of mass hysteria, residents of Strasbourg, France, began dancing in the streets and would not stop. Around 400 people joined in the dancing, which was seemingly encouraged by local officials. They believed continued dancing would help people recover from whatever got them dancing in the first place. Instead, many people died from heart attack, stroke or exhaustion.
