It's time to get used to pleats again because they're everywhere now. Some may refer to pleated trousers as mom pants, but they're much cooler than that this summer and fall. The key is to make sure they're proportioned and fit well. You'll look squat if you wear a cropped, wide-leg pair, but if you do go the cropped route make sure the pants also taper. Similarly, high-waisted, wide-leg trousers will take focus away from the hip area and shift it on the smallest part of your body. Also remember that super-tight and pleats don't mix, so choose a pair that graze the body, instead of ones that hug it.
