Drew Barrymore is, sadly, a perfect example of how a parent's addictions can be passed on to another generation. Drew has said her first memory of her dad, the actor John Barrymore, was when he picked her up and threw her against a wall at age three. An alcoholic who abandoned Drew and her mother, by the time Drew had checked into rehab for alcoholism and cocaine addiction at the ripe old age of 13, her pops hadn't seen her for seven years. Drew and her dad were mostly estranged during his life, but she got back in touch with John Barrymore shortly before he died from cancer in his 70s. "I couldn't figure out how to deal with him," Drew told People. "He was a free bird, you know? He couldn't handle being a father." During the last year of his life, while Drew was filming "Fever Pitch," she would go visit her father at an assisted living facility and try to mend their broken relationship. "[At one point] he looked at my feet and said, 'Perfect. You were made perfect.' I just started crying," Drew recalled. "I was like, 'Thank you, God, for letting me have this moment.'"
