The Bustle: A structured rump was all the rage in the mid- to late-19th century, when bustles added huge volume to Victorian-style skirts. Used at first to simply prevent expensive dress fabric from dragging on the ground, bustles soon became highly fashionable due to their ability to make the waist look smaller and exaggerate the ideal female hourglass shape.
