Marlon Brando took activism to a whole new level when he boycotted the Oscars in 1973. He asked a woman named Sacheen Littlefeather, an Apache and Native-American Affirmative Image Committee spokeswoman, to give a speech on his behalf when he won Best Actor for "The Godfather." She deadpanned, "He very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. The reasons for this being the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry." Sacheen was later revealed to be actress Maria Cruz. Good sentiment, yet incredibly strange. [YouTube, Telegraph]Related to: speech marlon brando
