12 Stars Who’ve Done “Hollywood Homely”

Last year, we were taken with this post over at Feministing that called out Hollywood for casting completely beautiful women in roles that are supposed to be physically unattractive. Writer Chloe dubs this the "Liz Lemoning" trend -- inspired by Tina Fey's "30 Rock" character, who's always the butt of ugly jokes -- but it's more commonly known as "Hollywood Homely." That's when conventionally beautiful actresses are slightly mussed up (but not too much!) in order to play "ugly" female characters on TV and in film. Sometimes these characters then go through a bit of a makeover and are -- surprise, surprise -- actually beautiful underneath all that ugliness. (Usually such makeovers require swapping glasses for contacts and flat-ironing the hair.) The danger, says Feministing, is that portraying these beautiful women as "ugly" only means that the bar for female beauty is being set higher than ever: If Tina Fey, etc., are "ugly," what hope is there for the rest of us?
