The Hunger Games: As I've said numerous times, my inner age is 13, but you don't have to be a teen or feel like a teen inside to enjoy The Hunger Games, the first in a three-part young adult series from Suzanne Collins. The series has the addictive power of Twilight, but the theme is far more f**ked up and dystopian. The book is set in the future and takes place in a country called Panem, which is made up of 12 districts surrounding The Capitol. The Capitol is where the government and the ruling class live and they keep the poor folks in the 12 districts under complete control. The biggest example -- to punish the 12 districts for an uprising that took place years before, each year the Capitol forces each district to send a young man and a young woman to fight to the death in an event called "The Hunger Games." Worst of all, the districts (including the parents of those forced to fight in the Games) are forced to watch the whole thing on TV as if it were some sort of celebration. The main character is a total girl badass named Katniss Everdeen who takes her younger sister's place in the Games.
I read the first book this past weekend and was seriously engrossed. I cannot wait to run out and buy the sequels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, and am getting psyched for the movie version. Jennifer Lawrence has been cast as Katniss Everdeen, a great choice, in my opinion.
