Yesterday, ABC announced it was canceling two of the longest running soap operas -- "All My Children," which began in 1970, and "One Life to Live," which debuted in 1968. "General Hospital" is now the network's only remaining soap. ABC plans on filling the time slots with two lifestyle shows -- "The Chew," a food program with Clinton Kelly and Mario Batali among the rumored hosts; and "The Revolution," which has been vaguely described as about "health and lifestyle transformations." As a longtime soap opera fan, I'm seriously bummed. While my favorite soap, "General Hospital," remains afloat, and other network soaps -- like "Days of Our Lives" on NBC and "The Young and the Restless" on CBS -- live on as well, two soaps canceled in one day kinda, sorta puts all the others on notice; keep those ratings up, or you'll get the ax too.
With that in mind, I wanted to relive some of the soap opera storylines over the years that kept me -- and so many others -- glued to the TV screen. If you're a soap fan, share your favorite storylines and plot twists in the comments!
