Style 911: I Want A Cute And Warm Winter Coat For NYC

I’m having a hard time finding a warm winter coat to deal with the bone-chilling cold of NYC. I want a cute but VERY warm winter options! Not trying to go out in a hardcore parka or sporty-looking snow boarding jacket. I do not do winter sports and don’t want to look like it. Perhaps a list of cozy yet stylish options? Classy enough to walk into an office with but cute enough walking in NYC. It gets cold but that shouldn’t require me having to look like “Nanook of the North.” – Victoria

NYC is definitely a place where you’re expected to look stylish at all costs, even if it’s freezing out. So here’s what I’ve learned through the decades about winter coats and this city: There will definitely come a day when you’re going to be thankful for your warmest coat, even if it’s completely hideous. I’ve held on to a bright red down coat from the Gap since the early ’00s because there is always one day that my fashionable coat isn’t going to cut it, no matter how much I layer. The other thing about dressing for the cold in NYC is that your coat makes a huge first impression, so you have to make it count. Even though you should keep your warmest, most hideous coat as an option, that doesn’t mean you can’t go shopping for a stylish coat to be your workhorse for most of the winter. Get some tips for picking out one that can go casual or dressy, after the jump. Keep reading »

Cobie Smulders On The Return Of Robin Sparkles

“It’s like a cartoon version of myself. In the ’80s … You should have seen the original version. We had to keep scaling it back because we couldn’t say a lot of things, but it was so much fun to toe that line of, “What can we get away with?” We do this bit where we’re using a joystick during a multiplication lesson and we’re doing lots of fast multiplication questions and we’re jerking the stick around. And I think Nicole had a line like, ‘Boy, it’s getting harder’ and they wouldn’t let us do that. I think it’s because she did it so well being a big ol’ sexy pot.”

Cobie Smulders of “How I Met Your Mother” talks about getting to play Canadian teen idol Robin Sparkles for a third time in yesterday’s episode. She even got a sidekick this time, Jessica Glitter, played by Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. It was truly a glorious half hour of television. [NY Post] Keep reading »

We See Chick Flicks: “Made In Dagenham”

Starring Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike, and Bob Hoskins

We all know what 1960s America looked like for white-collar professional women like the ones on “Mad Men.” While Joan and Peggy were fighting off handsy account men in New York’s office towers, women in working-class towns like Dagenham, England, were doing hand-to-hand combat as well — only against the entire Ford Motor Company. “Made In Dagenham” is based on the true story of 187 women who sewed car seat upholstery for a Ford plant in Britain and what happens when they banded together to fight exploitation by their bosses. Their classification as “unskilled” laborers and the fact that they earned a fraction of the male employees’ paychecks led these strong, brave ladies to launch a history-making 1968 strike. When The Frisky Took On Ted

A couple of weeks ago, The Frisky participated in TakeOnTed, the first-ever remote-controlled digital styling project with Ted Baker London. I was tasked with styling a man and woman for her hypothetical first time meeting his parents at their Notting Hill home. I sent tweets to #TakeOnTed to give directions on my styling. For her, I went for an outfit that was smart and approachable-looking, but also conveyed that she had style. I gave her lips a sheer rosy-tinted stain because a saturated red lip is too bold for meeting the ‘rents, and left her hair curly and bouncy. I think the guy in this situation is at an advantage because he doesn’t have to impress his own parents. So I kept his look layered and pulled together. Check out the video above from the live styling session. And peep the finished photo and get the fashion details after the jump. Keep reading »
