Hair Love: The Side Braid

We heart Lauren Conrad’s sidebraid. From high fashion to the street, its caught on almost as fast as Jennifer Aniston’s Friends bob.

From the Tracy Reese runway braid, the Hill’s LC braid and finally the street hair braid, here’s how to do it:
1. Part hair slightly more than halfway
2. Start a regular braid but grab more hair each time you cross over another strand
3. When you get to halfway through, pin the hair with two bobby pins

Try this if you want some pictures er, illustrations to guide you.

It’s 2009. Are Fashion Magazines Relevant Anymore?

Lady mags got you down? If so, you’ve got something in common with notorious Daily Mail columnist Liz Jones. Ms. Jones, who recently caused a stir with her confessional forays into “anorexia journalism,” has recently moved on from eating disorders and is now focusing on a semi-related topic: fashion magazines, publications where she once thrived as a staffer, which she now calls “patronizing, fake and pointless.” So it seems I have something in common with Jones, too. I grew up loving fashion magazines and spent most of my career working for them. And it’s been awhile now since I’ve become relatively dissatisfied with their sketchy intentions. I guess you could call it a love/hate relationship. Keep reading »

Pullout Method Almost As Effective As Condoms

sex education photo

Authors of a new paper in Contraception magazine say that the withdrawal method is as effective as condoms when it comes to pregnancy prevention. They say “typical use” of the withdrawal method results in pregnancy 18 percent of the time, versus 17 percent for typical use of condoms. The lead author, Rachel K. Jones, told the New York Times that she and her colleagues wanted to publish the paper because the pullout method was being dismissed, and some people had the impression that it was akin to not using contraception at all. She added that it seemed logical to compare the withdrawal method with condoms because health care professionals advocate condom use, even though that method also has flaws. Now, however, some educators and physicians fear that putting out this new message will cause teenagers to abandon condoms altogether. They also point out that unlike condoms, the withdrawal method can’t prevent sexually transmitted diseases and infections. The pullout method is less problematic in marriages and other monogamous, long-term relationships, but what happens when a young man gets it wrong or doesn’t withdraw when he said he would? Can horny teen boys really be trusted to pull out? Keep reading »

15 Things We Wish The Recession Would Get Rid Of

The recession has been blamed for a ton of things, from an increase in sex work to a decrease in the fabulousness of Fashion Week (and pretty much everything in between). But, to its credit, the recession has also produced some very welcome casualties, like the imminent death of those awful Crocs…and Hummers (and at least 12 other terrible things). After the jump, 15 more things we wish the recession would get rid of. Keep reading »

“The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All”: Where Were Reid And Wes?

On last night’s epiode of “The Bachelorette,” also known as the otherwise useless and boring “Men Tell All” segment that comes before the finale (airing next week), two of the men were mysteriously absent — Wes Hayden and Reid Rosenthal. Of their absence, host Chris Harrison said that Reid “had a prior engagement” and Wes couldn’t make it either. Um, right. For starters, these dudes sign contracts don’t they? I can’t remember when a “Bachelor” or “Bachelorette” contestant, especially one that made as much of an impact as Wes, got let off the hook from appearing on the “Tell All” episode. Well, lookie here, Wes has an explanation… Keep reading »

Muslim Woman Lashed For Having A Beer

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, a 32-year-old Muslim model, has committed a crime against Islam—she had a beer in a night club. She didn’t get deliriously drunk, mind you, she had a single beer. And now she will be flogged for her indiscretion—literally, lashed six times with a cane. Shukarno was at a Pahang nightclub in Malaysia when police raided it. She plead guilty to drinking a beer, probably expecting to be fined, which is the usual punishment for an alcohol offense. But hard-core judge Abdul Rahman Yunus told papers that Shukarno’s beating punishment serves as a “lesson to all Muslims.” In all, this single beer will cost her $1,400 and six lash marks on her body. While Shukarno will probs never touch the stuff again, her harsh punishment will not keep all Muslims from taking down a cold one. Sorry, Judge Abdul, but this punishment does NOT fit the crime. Statement-Making Art: Liquidated Logos

Will you find yourself in Hong Kong soon-ish? Stop by the Art Statements Gallery for a look-see of French street artist Zev’s wild new exhibition, “Liquidated Logos.” Zev, known for his shadow drawings in the streets of Paris, is “flipping the script” on world-renowned brands such as Coca-Cola and Chanel, and with this show is broadening his scope to include fashion icon Louis Vuitton. Using his trademark technique of “liquidation,” he reinterprets Takashi Murakami’s Louis Vuitton pattern, Chanel’s famous double “C” logo and the arches of Mickey D’s, among others. (To drum up some press for the opening, Zev took to the streets of labels-obsessed Hong Kong, painting a “liquidated” Chanel logo atop the flagship Giorgio Armani store to “reflect the war of brands.” He was arrested and Armani, as you may have guessed, was not all that pleased, mostly because the limestone store facade soaked up the black paint, making it pretty impossible to remove the errant logo.) For more photos of the exhibition, check out Arrested Motion. [Cool Hunting] Keep reading »
