“NY Post” In Trouble For Accusing Hotel Maid Of Prostitution

Fireworks weren’t the only thing exploding over 4th of July weekend: that’s also when The New York Post published a scathing front-page article about the hotel maid who accused ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault which, among other things, called her a prostitute. The paper quoted an unnamed source “close to the investigation” who said, “There is information … of her getting extraordinary tips, if you know what I mean. And it’s not for bringing extra f**king towels.” It basically insinuated the woman was being pimped out by her union.

The newsprint probably wasn’t even dry before the hotel maid, a refugee from Guinea who lives in the Bronx, filed a libel lawsuit against the Post. Now, as media reporters, like Erik Wemple at The Washington Post, look closer at the Post‘s so-called reportage, the prostitution allegation looks even fishier. Instead, it looks more like a smear to make this woman just look like some whore. Keep reading »

Infographic: What A 16 Pound Baby Looks Like, In Other Stuff

This week, a woman in Texas gave birth to a terrifyingly large 16.1 lb. baby named JaMichael Brown. JaMichael’s way-larger-than-average size is being attributed in large part to his mother’s gestational diabetes which causes her to produce extra insulin. “Although insulin does not cross the placenta, glucose and other nutrients do. So extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels,” explained the American Diabetes Association. “This causes the baby’s pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. Since the baby is getting more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy is stored as fat.” And JaMichael was delivered — thankfully via C-section so your vag can quit with the sympathy pains — a week early, even. Whoa. We weren’t sure we could fully fathom what a 16.1 lb. baby was really all about, so we decided to create this helpful chart of items that weigh just as much as JaMichael does. Keep reading »

The Casey Anthony Madness Continues

A week later, we are still in shock that Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her daughter, Caylee, and is scheduled to be released this Sunday. Apparently, the rest of the country is in the same state. Juror number 12 in the case, a redheaded woman in her 60s, quit her part-time job at a Publix grocery store and has gone into hiding. Apparently, she received several death threats and was freaked out about the possibility of retaliation for the verdict. She told her husband on the way out the door, “I’d rather go to jail than sit on a jury like this again.”

Meanwhile, the police were called to settle a squabble between a group of Florida fisherman over the case. Keep reading »

The Gonorrhea Superbug Is Here

Did you need something new to worry about today? No problem, I can help you out with that. According to the C.D.C., a new strain of gonorrhea — aka “The Crap” — identified in a woman in Japan and two men in Norway, appears to be resistant to treatment. While no cases of the new gonorrhea “superbug” have been reported in the U.S., officials are concerned about the “very complex bacteria which has a pretty amazing ability to mutate and for people to develop resistances to antibiotics.” In fact, that crafty bug has already mutated three times since the 1940s. And not to get you worried or anything (well maybe just a little bit), but we are currently using the last known treatment for the STD. So what does that mean considering that more than 700,000 people in the U.S. contract the clap every year? Outlook not so good if supergonorrhea starts spreading. So yeah, you already knew this, but, um … SAFE SEX. [NY Times] Keep reading »

Milk Vows To Help “Men Living With PMS”

The milk ad campaigns of yore have been, for the most part, non-offensive. I mean, there’s not too much to argue with in the slogans “Does a Body Good” and “Got Milk?” But the California Milk Processor Board is taking a new approach which I find totally obnoxious. Their new ads riff on a recent study that shows milk can reduce PMS symptoms (or more accurately, that taking 1200 milligrams of calcium a day for three months can), but this information isn’t presented to women—it’s packaged for men. In the “Everything I Do Is Wrong” campaign, men with baffled expressions on their faces clutch cartons of milk under text that reads, “Are you a man living with PMS?” and “I’m sorry I listened to what you said and not what you meant.” Underneath, a URL leads dudes to EverythingIDoIsWrong.org, a website that’s a mock public service announcement for men dealing with the horrors of women’s PMS.

All I can say to this is … UGH. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: New Hampshire Planned Parenthood Stops Dispensing Birth Control

  • Planned Parenthood of New Hampshire has stopped dispensing birth control because of budgetary issues. The state government, upset that Planned Parenthood clinics provide abortions, naturally yanked funding from the clinics, preventing them from providing services which could prevent women from having abortions. It makes so much sense. [Concord Monitor]
  • The New York Post‘s “scoop” that the hotel maid who accused ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was actually a prostitute is looking hella fishy. [Washington Post]
  • Why won’t the mainstream media call abortion clinic violence what it is: terrorism? [Slate]
