Gone With The Wind: The Musical!

One of the things my paternal grandmother gave me, besides an addiction to soap operas and a moderate talent for knitting, is a huge appreciation for the genius of Gone With The Wind. I’ve read the book — all 1037 pages of it — 20 times and have seen the movie — all 238 minutes of it — double that many times. Put aside the la-di-da approach to slavery, the romanticizing of the Civil War, and the few boring chapters in the middle — it is the best book ever. For those of you who just don’t think you can handle such an in-depth read, or the bed sores that come from sitting through the movie, there’s good news! Gone With The Wind is opening as a friggin’ MUSICAL in London this week and we can only pray that it does so well there, that it comes to Broadway. The producers have managed to cut the script down to a mere 3.5 hours (whatever, that’s like a mini-marathon of Keeping Up With The Kardashians) and the musical’s writer says she stuck more to Margaret Mitchell’s original story than the movie. “The film reflected Depression-era values and completely ignored many things in the novel,” Martin said. “[Scarlett O'Hara] is madly heroic in all she does. Her experience, I think, will resonate with any woman.” We certainly give a damn about it! [CNN] Keep reading »

Where Women Rule

We’ve all wondered: What if women ruled the world? While it may seem far fetched, we’ve already got a town — McLean, Texas. It’s got one stoplight and a whole lot of unstoppable women. Since 2007, the mayor, her five aldermen, the post office master, the justice of the peace, school principal, the bank, nursing home, and grocery store managers, are all large and in charge ladies. Even their staunchest of critics, aka their husbands, can’t help but notice the positive changes around their town. Now, with Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, they’re even thinking nationally. While Bill Reeves, local and spouse of Alderman Lynn Reeves, wouldn’t vote for one lady alone, he said if Clinton picked an all female cabinet like they have in McLean, he’d vote for her. “They’d do no worse, and there’s a chance of it being much better.” Now that’s girl power! Start Taking Care Of Yourself

Bad news, guys. For the first time since the early 1900s when the Spanish Flu was killing people off, the life expectancy of American women is falling. In nearly 1,000 counties — most evident in the Deep South, Appalachia, and the lower Midwest — women’s life expectancy is now shorter than it was in the 1980s. The driving force behind this trend appears to be increases in deaths from diabetes, lung cancer, emphysema, and kidney failure. Smoking like fiends, eating poorly and skipping out on exercise hasn’t helped, either. [Washington Post] Keep reading »

Romance On TV: The Bach Meets Shayne’s Heavily Made-Up Mom

Bachelor Matt met the fams last night, and while most of the parents were totally boring, Shayne’s parents were priceless. Of course, her father is Lorenzo Lamas (I wonder how Shayne would rate on Lamas’ show Are You Hot?), but his meet and greet with The Bach wasn’t as awesome as I expected. But luckily, Shayne’s mom, Michelle, was as wonderful as I could have dreamed. Shauna Sand (another Lamas ex), behold YOUR FUTURE.

At the end of the episode, Noelle got the boot and only Shayne, Chelsea, and Blah-manda (my nickname for Amanda) remain. I’m sorry, I am rooting for Shayne. I can’t help it! She seems shockingly bright and sincere. [ABC: The Bachelor] Keep reading »

Check Out People Like They’re Books

A couple countries are trying out a new “living library” concept. At these events, various types of people — nurse, male nanny, vegan, police officer — are “books” available to check out for half-hour time periods. This might sound a little like some sort of dating event, but it’s actually more of an opportunity to learn about different types of people in an environment where stereotypes and other topics that might be off-limits in the real world can be openly discussed. “We work on the principle that extreme violence and aggression happens between people who don’t know each other,” said the Living Library’s founder, Ronni Abergel, “so the Living Library can bring together people who are otherwise unlikely to meet.” [The Times, U.K.] Keep reading »

Good Luck Getting Any Shut-Eye If Your Husband Suffers From Sleep Apnea

Earlier, we discussed how the device that helps those suffering from sleep apnea is cumbersome and unattractive. However, a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that men were more likely to wear the CPAP machine if their wives slept with them, rather than in a separate bed. Unfortunately, women don’t sleep as well when their gas-mask-wearing husband cuddles in bed with them. [Reuters Health] Keep reading »
