Having A Baby — Not Having An Abortion — Increases Your Risk For Mental Health Problems

Having an abortion does not trigger mental health problems, according to a Danish study of 365,550 teen girls and women who had an abortion or a baby between 1995 and 2007. In fact, what makes a woman most at risk for mental health problems is having a baby, the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found. None of the women studied had a prior history of psychiatric hospitalization.

Sorry to burst your bubble, anti-abortion extremists. Keep reading »

What Obama’s “State Of The Union” Address Said, And Didn’t Say, About Women

You may have watched President Obama‘s “State of the Union” address in person. Me? I watched the first episode of season one of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” (It had been a long day.) Reading the “State of the Union” address online this morning, I’m once again proud of my president and the country I come from. But I was dismayed — a tiny bit surprised, even — to see no mention of women’s rights or women’s issues — or even women at all — in the “State of the Union.” As Courtney E. Martin put it, writing for Feministing, the speech was “sort of unremarkable to these feminist ears.” Keep reading »

At Least You Don’t Have Moebius Syndrome

Don’t tell Hayley to turn her frown upside down. She’s not trying to be a Debbie Downer, she is just incapable of smiling or moving her face at all for that matter. The 14-year-old suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Moebius Syndrome. People with this disorder are born missing vital nerves and sometimes limbs. This often impairs their ability to speak, blink, chew, or move their face. In Hayley’s case, her speech is very limited, her face is paralyzed, she has no hands, sleeps with her eyes open, and suffers with severe digestive issues. I dare you to try to complain about your problems now. [The Sun] Keep reading »

Woman Allegedly Mows Down Cousin After Man Refuses Her Facebook Friend Request

Today in “bitches be crazy!” news: Melanie Snanopoulos, of Long Island, allegedly mowed down her cousin, Giselle Penagos, 21, twice with her van after fighting about a guy. On Sunday, Snanopoulos and Penagos got in a heated fight while driving after Snanopoulos discovered that a man she was interested in had accepted Penagos’ Facebook friend request, but ignored her own. After Snanopoulos pulled over, Penagos jumped out of the van and Snanopoulos followed her. The two fought on the street and then Snanopoulos allegedly hopped back in the van and drove straight into Penagos. She then supposedly reversed and plowed into Penagos for a second time. Over a dude ignoring a friend request? Maybe he just hadn’t gotten around to accepting it yet! Yeesh. Keep reading »
