Victoria’s Secret Models Converge In Times Square

Victoria's Secret models

Who says those Angels all look alike? The name of the game here is clearly D-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y. We knew we should’ve tried out for their model search contest!

Hair Model Citizen: Lily Allen’s Skunky Do

Lily Allen

We’re not saying whether or not we’re wild about Lily Allen‘s new ‘do (we’ll leave that up to you), but she is definitely a Hair Model Citizen for busting out something, well, interesting. So she’s got the rock star platinum thing going on: really choppy, thick bangs and plenty of chunks of black. Now the only way to get this look—if you’re interested, that is—is to be prepared to do some serious damage to your hair. You’d have to bleach the whole thing and then separately dye the black, unless you already have black hair and you could just not dye a few strands. On second thought, we’d recommend leaving this look to Lily Allen. [Manchester, 11/17/09]

Fashion Scandal Du Jour: Underage Drinking On Shopbop!

OK, people, brace yourselves: There are kids who are drinking underage, probably all the time. We know, we know. How do we know? Because we watched this Stylecaster and Shopbop video of Manhattan socials Poppy Delevinge, Hayley Bloomingdale and Isabelle McNally getting ready for a night on the town (styled by Shopbop’s own fashion director Kate Ciepluch), and it starts with swigs of champers and involves some flip cup. Only problem is, Miss McNally is still a teenager. D’oh! Oh well, like we care. Plus, what’s that show the kids are wild about? The “Gossip Girl” thingie? Aren’t those fictional rich gals always downing martinis? Anyway ... In my day that was an after-school special. Now, not so much. [Shopbop]

Gift Idea For The Literary Fashionista

Moby Dick Clutch

Well, or so we thought. Olympia Le Tan’s canvas, brass, felt and silk thread clutches feature first-edition covers of 21 different classics are certainly “different” and chic in the nerdiest way possible. (In fact, Tilda Swinton reportedly scooped one up.) Then we found out they cost $1500.00 each, and our collective jaws dropped. So, um yeah. [Inventor Spot]

The Old-School Fashion Hierarchy Is Falling Down

Fashion Revolution

What would the fashion industry look like if it shrugged off the exclusivity that has characterized it for, well, centuries, and cut out the middleman? It seems like the process is already well underway. This year’s Fashion Weeks had everyone wondering the same thing, and the buzz is best summed up thusly:

“The shows during September and October were a first glimpse of what the elitist fashion world could soon become: a business where designers take their collections directly to customers, no longer filtered through fashion editors at glossy magazines and buyers at top stores.”

But does that really mean the end of old-school power players like, say, Anna Wintour and Joe Zee? [New York Times]

This Wolf Trend Has Really Taken Off

Daisy Lowe

Judging from oh, say, all those three wolf moon shirts that keep popping up all over the place, wolves are (still) hot, hot, hot right now! They must be if international “it” girl Daisy Lowe wore this fetching (har) hat to Rihanna’s “it” concert in London this evening. Being complete sheep (ha), we scoured the web in search of this cap, because we simply had to have it. So the bad news is we stumbled upon a few sort-of-but-not-really similar versions at Ecrater and, um, the Minnesota Historical Society, but go figure, they’re waaay too scary-looking. The good news is we finally started to wonder why the hell we were looking for a hat like this in the first place and stopped doing so immediately. Whew, that was a close one.

Naomi Campbell Has A Kind Of Awesome Side

Naomi Campbell in Tanzania

For once, controversial supermodel Naomi Campbell is making headlines for something other than cell phone beatdowns. I don’t know how long she’s been involved in charity work (maybe it’s been overshadowed by her more notorious exploits), but evidently she visits Africa often and is the global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance, an international coalition for maternal health, which is holding its annual general meeting in Tanzania, where a woman dies in childbirth every hour. To raise money, she helped organize the Fashion for Relief charity featuring local designers, and gave a talk from the runway, which she used as a platform for another cause as well:

“Where do we see a woman of color in an advert? It’s quite blatant. There’s definitely space for more black models but has there been enough effort? It was getting better but it’s slipped back this year. Women of color who have had a great experience in life need to share their experiences with others. The world is not made up of blonde hair and blue eyes. We need to share ourselves.”

Maybe she hired some spin doctors to fix up her image, but we like this new direction for Naomi, as crusader of change for the fashion industry and doing important charity work. Hey, it worked for Angelina. [Daily Mail]

Lady Gaga’s Architectural Digest

Lady Gaga

It ain’t no thang to spot Lady Gaga wearing crazy headgear or anything, but the one she wore at the 30th Anniversary Gala of MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) was notable for being designed by none other than uber-architect Frank Gehry. Now that’s an interesting fashion collaboration. [L.A., 11/14/09]
