Tavi And Jane Pratt To Start “Sassy”-Esque Teen Mag (And You Can Be A Part Of It!)

The media lords hath heard our prayers! If you aren’t already freaking out, you will when you hear this: Fashion blogging sensation Tavi and Jane Pratt (founder and editor of Sassy and Jane mags) are teaming up to create a new teen magazine. Tavi made the announcement on her blog, saying, “You guys may know how I feel about Sassy. You also may know that I’ve been babbling about how I think our generation should get one, too. Jane Pratt, founding editor and then EIC of Sassy, also became aware, and emailed me, and we’ve met a couple times, and it looks like we’re going to start a magazine for an audience of wallflowerly teenage girls.”

People like us have been clamoring for ages for a Sassy revival, and we could see the potential for that to happen with Tavi, but as she wisely points out, “[this magazine] won’t be Sassy (or the rebirth of Sassy, or Sassy 2.0) and nor do we want it to be.” Rather, the publication will “use Sassy as a point of reference for the whole teen-magazine-that-doesn’t-suck thing …” We love how Tavi wants to create something new but still retain the nostalgia for an era that feels creative to us now … Keep reading »

Feminists Say Lad Mags Should Be On The Top Shelf Next To Porn

Wondering what happened to your Maxim magazine? An activist group in the U.K. — that calls itself Object — storms into stores and magazine stands throughout London once a month on “Feminist Fridays,” stuffing lad mags into paper bags scribbled with phrases like “This magazine dehumanizes women! Don’t buy it! and “Love women, hate sexism!” Object say lad mags like Maxim (former employer of our dear Amelia, as well as John DeVore) and the U.K.’s Zoo are just watered-down versions of porn magazines like Hustler and even if they aren’t as, um, gynecologically educational as pornographic magazines, they’re just as raunchy and disrespectful in their depictions of women. Jane Lynch Surrounded By Beefcakes

OK, so these images of Jane Lynch aren’t going to incite the same uproar as the Terry Richardson images of Gleeks Lea Michele and Dianna Agron in the November GQ. But still, we like that they took Sue Sylvester out of the track suit and gave her a glam moment. Oh, and surrounded her with scantily clad dudes. [People]

Playgirl Wants The Men Of “Glee”

glee's mark and chord

It’s time to play another round of “How much would Playgirl pay famous dudes to take their clothes off?” Last time we talked, Vinny of “Jersey Shore” got an offer for $30K, which doesn’t stack up to the $100K that Levi Johnston supposedly netted from the mag. Now, Playgirl is after the men of “Glee.” But not just any “Glee” stud—they want Chord Overstreet (Sam) or Mark Salling (Puck). They’d pass on Cory Monteith (Finn) or Matthew Morrison (Mr. Schuester). A rep for the mag said they would offer Chord and Mark $100K each for a shoot, and assured them it wouldn’t even have to be X-rated. Keep reading »

Gleek Dianna Agron Defends Her GQ Cover

“In the land of Madonna, Britney, Miley, ‘Gossip Girl,’ other public figures and shows that have pushed the envelope and challenged the levels of comfort in their viewers and fans, we are not the first. Now, in perpetuating the type of images that evoke these kind of emotions, I am sorry. If you are hurt or these photos make you uncomfortable, it was never our intention. And if your eight-year-old has a copy of our GQ cover in hand, again I am sorry. But I would have to ask, how on earth did it get there? … These aren’t photos I am going to frame and put on my desk, but hey, nor are any of the photos I take for magazines … If you asked me for my dream photo shoot, I’d be in a treehouse, in a wild costume, war-paint and I’d be playing with my pet dragon.”

—Dianna Agron, aka Quinn on “Glee,” responds to folks being up in arms over her risque shots in the November issue of GQ. I hope some magazine is working on that pet dragon concept as we speak. [Fell Down The Rabbit Hole] Keep reading »

“OK!” Magazine Co-Opts Bullying For Stars “Bullied For Their Weight”

The effects of bullying are in the news everywhere lately, from the teen girl, Megan Meier, who killed herself after being harassed on MySpace, to Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi and the spate of copycat suicides that followed him. As crushing as the reports of each new suicide can be, I’m also grateful that the mainstream media is finally paying attention to the issues that lay underneath bullying — like an article about Clementi that made last week’s cover of People magazine. Any conversation about bullying is an opportunity to make people think about their own use of intimidation and the abuse of power.

But I take issue with OK! magazine’s recent cover depicting Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Hudson under the tag line “Bullied For Their Weight: They’ll Never Call Me Fat Again!” Um, skinny, beautiful, rich women are the two victims you could come up with for a bullying story? And they stuck it to their bullies by going on a juice diet? Yeah, that’s the message we want to send: capitulate to the bullies and you won’t be given crap anymore! If some jerks is calling you a heifer, drop from size 16 to size 4. That’ll show ‘em. Keep reading »
