Before Amelia Earhart became famous for flying, she was all about the needle and thread it seems. What, you didn’t know she was a fashion designer? OK, we weren’t aware either, but you learn something new every day right? Amelia learned how to sew as a young girl, and made her own clothes while working as a social worker, all before she took to the skies. In order to finance her flying expeditions, she launched her first line in 1934, called Amelia Earhart Fashions, which even sold at Macy’s in New York and Marshall Field’s in Chicago. Amelia was all about creating designs for women which were sensible—separates, comfortable pieces, and machine washable items—with a bit of whimsy including shirt tails and parachute silk raincoats with buttons shaped like propellers. Of course, as a designer, Amelia created her own clothes as well, including a jumpsuit that was designed based on the need for comfortable clothes to wear in the cockpit. This isn’t the celebrity fashion line of today either: Amelia’s patterns were published and featured in Woman’s Home Companion magazine.

Have you heard about Nicole Forrester? She’s a dancer at the hilariously named Tattletale club, where she says she began an acquaintance with Josh Duhamel that ended in a one-night stand. Nicole says the National Enquirer told her the story would be published whether she participated or not, and then gave her $20K, presumably as payment for the interview and polygraph test she provided. That money does buy a lot of stripper heels, but it’s not enough to solve many problems these days. Did she just want the money or is she telling the truth? [People]

In today’s shoe revamp news, we bring you two genius, DIY ways to jazz up your tired, old shoes. (Yesterday, we talked about boot add-ons, FYI.) The first DIY option seems a little hipster-y to me, but it’s way adorable: Turn your Keds (remember those?) or similar sneaks into saddle shoes. Just be sure to buy fabric paint; you wouldn’t want a rainstorm to wash away all of your hard work! My older brother was supposed to start school, but he didn’t want to go alone, so my mom told them I was six since I was so tall. I vividly remember the best and worst night of my year. As Barack Obama cheered “Yes, We Can,” my mother was absent-mindedly thumbing what we all agreed was a lump on her chest. I took comfort in the fact that she said it hurt—cancer doesn’t hurt. She’ll be fine, I thought. But as we toasted champagne and hugged each other for Obama’s victory, with brows slightly furrowed, I prayed for my mother, my strong and stubborn mother. I didn’t go with her to the doctor—my father did. I probably slept until noon, which was a common occurrence since I’d just driven all my belongings and my cat 1,991 miles from New York City to Santa Fe in three days. I was jobless, tentatively moving to Los Angeles in a few months and had no idea what I was doing with my future. And it turned out that my 58-year-old mother, my best friend and deepest confidant, had breast cancer.

What if you woke up one morning in bed, laying next to your loving husband/boyfriend/whatever, and didn’t have any concept of what day, month, or, hell, year it was? And what if you found out, after being rushed to the doctor, that the reason for your short-term memory loss was that you had sex the night before? I dunno about you, but it would freak me the eff out. According to an article on CNN, “for decades, doctors described cases of a rare neurological condition that usually occurred in patients over age 50. Neurologists noted that patients knew their identities, but couldn’t retain recent memory, where they were and how they got there. They showed no other symptoms.”

They now have a name for this condition—transient global amnesia (TGA)—and sex is one of the primary triggers. People with this condition lose their ability to retain immediate memories after engaging in strenuous activity—like bumping uglies, working out, or even submerging themselves in hot or cold water. “The unifying thing about each of them is they produce a sudden and significant change in blood flow,” Dr. Louis Caplan, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, told CNN.

There’s only so much you can do with a pair of leggings, but briefs-exposure shouldn’t be one of them, right? Well, we’ll give her credit for not jumping on the sequined-leggings bandwagon, for now. I’ve always thought it was really sweet that Jessica Simpson and Dolly Parton are friends. When Jessica flubbed the words to “9 to 5” performing for President Bush a few years back, Dolly said to the press, “Jessica is so talented that I’m sure that someday they will be paying tribute to her.” When folks poked fun at Jessica’s weight, Dolly told Larry King, “People always treat her bad. They always talk bad about her. I just recorded a song with her a few months ago. And I’ve never been around a person any sweeter in my life.” These two have a ton in common—the big blond hair, the country roots, and, of course, their massive chests. Well, last night on Twitter, they finally acknowledged the latter commonality. Dolly Tweeted, “Ahhh chiropractor ... Hurts so good : - ) you lug these around and see if your back don’t hurt!” To which Jessica responded, “Amen sister : - ).”

Of course we get the real dirt a few days after the big night. Apparently, Mariah Carey and Rihanna had a diva-off on Halloween. Even though Mariah was hosting the party, Rihanna didn’t pay her regards to the songstress, a witness said. And Rihanna’s tiger costume required a security guard to hold up the tail, while Mariah needed six guards to clear a path to the bathroom so her angel wings didn’t get tousled. Sheesh. [NY Post]
