When I was growing up, one of life’s greatest pleasures was going over to my grandmother’s house and making Coke slushies and microwaved s’mores. These days, I can still make s’mores when I’ve got the hankering, but my homemade slushie cravings have long gone unquenched because I lacked the proper device — but not anymore! On a recent boiling hot summer day, we were on a stroll, dripping with sweat from head to ass to toe, craving something cool and refreshing. An answer to our prayers came in the form of a woman selling what she called paletas (also known as “Mexican ice pops”). Not your average popsicle, these babies are packed with fruit and other fresh flavors in wicked combinations like mango-chile, horchata-strawberry, and dulce de leche. We were in heaven. I admitted last week that after several months of no exercise, I’ve gotten a little flabby. Since I’m not the most creative person when it comes to fitness, I asked you to give me your easy, fuss-free exercise tips. Many of you suggested I begin running or walking, instead of working out in the small inside space I have available. Earlier this year, I decided that my personal trainer wasn’t a necessity. I told myself that I could save the money I paid him, while employing the exercises he taught me and taking advantage of BeFitNYC, NYC’s free or low-cost fitness program. But you know what? I got lazy … big surprise right? So, now I’ve got a tricycle tire around my mid-section, a droopy butt, and fat knees. I need help! So, unlike most of the New York-based Frisky crew, I live just outside of Portland, Oregon. I love my place, which is a one-bedroom in a condo complex (the owner rents it out) that I share with my boyfriend, Nick. Maybe it’s due to growing up with a scientist father who had a large shelf in the living room dedicated to manta ray exoskeletons, but my favorite spaces are the ones that tell stories about the people who live there and spark conversations with the people who visit.
