fuck your noguchi coffee table

I firmly believe that the glut of home how-to and design blogs exist solely to make me feel bad about myself (and my narcissism). They make me jealous. My apartment will never contain a cheekily reupholstered couch (the cat will just ruin it), or a darling set of succulent plants (I kill everything), or a well-appointed and tasteful set of throw cushions (again, the cat).

It’s irksome, but I deal in my own way, which is to throw side eye at anyone who tells me about how they decoupaged a set of dinner plates. The guy/gal behind the Tumblr “Fuck Your Noguchi Coffee Table” has their own method of dealing. And that’s giving all the “fuck yous” to these preciously curated homes. Fuck your hat branch, indeed! Take Me There: I Want To Live In A Cave House

Cappadocia cave house

You’re probably not going to get great cell phone reception, but who cares? You live in a house carved out of the side of a mountain. Is there anything cooler than that? This pic of the The Yunak Evleri Cave Hotel in Cappadocia, Turkey, which is high on my list of Places I Need To Go To Right Now. But there are plenty of other places where people made their houses out of the sides of mountains. When I was in Fez, Morocco, you could see the remnants of former cave homes carved into the sides of the mountains outside the Medina. France, Italy, China — and yes, even Arizona — also boast cave-dwelling opportunities, so what are you waiting for? [io9]

Because I’m a jealous and petty person, I can’t stand to read lifestyle/home/craft blogs. Who are these people with endless amounts of free time, money and craft experience who seem to effortlessly turn their homes into the back page of a Martha Stewart magazine? They obviously don’t have cats. And because I’m jealous and petty, and not going to subscribe to Folk Magazine anytime soon (though they keep threatening me with a subscription), I need shortcuts to elevate me from sloth to semi-functioning, well-designed person.

Which is why we’ve collected a bunch of easy, really easy, tips to help make your house one others can be jealous of. Keep reading »

I was flipping through Lucky magazine this weekend (in the bath, actually! Amelia would be proud) and saw a gorgeous purse that literally made me gasp. The strap on my current purse broke recently, and this was the perfect new bag for me. The only problem? It costs $269, which is about $200 more than I usually spend on a bag. As my thoughts rushed toward justification of such a huge purchase, I realized my birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. Eureka! I thought, This could be a birthday present for myself! I’ve never bought myself more than a cupcake to celebrate my birthday, but in recent years a lot of my friends have started getting gifts for themselves–everything from jewelry to vacations. I think your birthday can be a good excuse to treat yo self, but it’s also an easy way to justify overspending. So, what do you all think of this idea? Have you ever bought a birthday gift for yourself?

Sometimes I don’t think green gets enough credit for being such a lovely color. Etsy Spotlight: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Mirrors are a great way to make a room seem bigger or add visual interest to your space. Mirrors with ornate frames can hold their own next to framed art and photos, and I love how unexpected they look mixed in with non-reflective decorations. Another great way to utilize a gorgeous mirror? Lay it down on your dresser or vanity and stack your prettiest jewelry and perfume bottles on it–suddenly your bedroom will feel like an old school boudoir. We scoured Etsy and found 8 mirrors in a variety of gorgeous vintage frames — all for 50 bucks or less. Click through to check ‘em out…

Decor Tips That’ll Make Your Family Stop Fighting

Your home is filled with sights, sounds, and scents. Which ones should you select to build positive relationships among the members of your family? This is the third article in a three part series about using home design to enhance family ties.

Consider the colors you put on your walls, furniture, and floors. Colors that aren’t very saturated but are pretty bright will put you and your family in a positive mood – and when we’re in good moods, we’re more likely to get along with others. We’re also better at problem solving and more creative. Brightness is just what it sounds like–baby blue is brighter than navy blue. Saturation is a little trickier–it is how pure a color is–kelly green is more saturated than olive green. Sage-y greens have the levels of saturation and brightness best for building relationships–but there are blues and many other colors that also set the right tone. Read more…
