Quick Pic: Elvis Presley’s Hair Has Split Ends

When Elvis Presley joined the U.S. Army in 1958, his famous quiff hairstyle was cut. Fifty-one years later, that tuft of hair is up for auction by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. The hair is expected to fetch up to $12,000 on Oct. 18 in Chicago. [10/7/09] Keep reading »

Hair Model Citizen: Dita Gives Good Head

Nobody works glamorous, 1940s pinup-girl style like the one and only Dita Von Teese. She gets an honorable citation today for denouncing the modern trend of sloppy ‘dos by sticking with a classic formula that looks good on her every time. Here’s how you can recreate the look: Treat slightly damp, towel-dried hair to a dose of Redken Crystal Curls Defining Shine Gel. Divide hair into multiple sections (about two inches each), and roll into large curlers, securing with bobby pins. Either go to sleep (if you’re doing this overnight) or use a blowdryer to completely dry your hair. Remove curlers, part to one side, and touch up with hairspray for hold and to smooth flyaways. Hey, we didn’t say looking this good was easy. [Madrid, 10/5/09] Keep reading »

What Do You Think Of Ombre Hair?

Photographer Tommy Ton snapped this photo of stylist and Dazed fashion editor Katie Shillingford, who’s in Paris for Fashion Week. She certainly took Drew Barrymore’s light-roots-dark-ends style to a whole ‘nother level with this ombre dye job. Perhaps this is going to be the next big thing in hair, kind of the opposite of frosted tips, which were huge for guys in the ’90s. [Jak & Jil] Keep reading »

Drew Barrymore’s Hair Went From Kooky To Country Club

We were slightly baffled by Drew Barrymore‘s most recent dye job, but it didn’t last long. Earlier this week, Drew appeared on “Today” and her blond hair no longer had black ends. She had chopped them off. Now she has the same ‘do as before, only slightly shorter. And she’s been wearing it slicked back. Keep reading »

Hair Model Citizen: Maybe She Sold Her Soul To The Devil

We seriously can’t wait for “The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus” to come out, but for now, we’ll settle for its star, Model Citizen Lily Cole’s outstanding hairdo. She could’ve gone for a perfectly polished blow-dry (like the ones we’re beginning to see on the red carpet again), but we like this toned-down version. To get the look, blow-dry until it’s almost there but the ends are ever so slightly damp. Work a cream stylant like John Frieda Straight Fixation Smoothing Creme into the ends and twist large sections (about four total) around with your fingers. Air-dry and traipse off to your film premiere or, ah, work. [Paris, 9/30/09] Keep reading »

Are You Sporting A “Recession” Haircut?

We’ve jokingly talked before about why women cut their hair, but here’s a historical example we didn’t really consider: war and its economic impact. The U.K.’s Telegraph recently reprinted a 1939 article dealing with trends in women’s hairstyles.

Back then, we learn, ladies were switching to short styles out of practicality and thrift: “Women who had cultivated romantic coiffures for which they had grown their hair 12 inches, are having seven of those inches cut off. Hairdressing is returning instead of hair-building.”

So, how have our thoughts about going short in times of economic crisis changed since the ’40s?

How To Rock A Headscarf A La The Marni Runway

While designers in New York and London were sculpting elaborate hairdos this year at Fashion Week, Marni went the opposite route by covering it all up—just goes to show you that you that sometimes revealing less is sexier. At the designer’s summer 2010 runway show in Milan, models sported bright, printed headscarves and chunky jewelry, giving off a jet-set vibe that we’re dying to try out ourselves. While it’s probably not a look you can wear to the office (unless you have a casual/stylish work zone like The Frisky does!), a Marni-inspired headscarf style would be great for weekend wear (bring on the large sunglasses) or going out (we’re thinking skinny jeans, a clutch, and some vintage jewelry).
