Hair Dos: 9 Braided Styles That Are Hardly Hippie-Dippie

Confession: I am obsessed with braids and always have been. If you look at my school pictures from ages 5 through 10, my hair is in some sort of crazy French braided hairstyle, courtesy of my mom’s talented fingers. Yet somehow, I have never learned how to do anything besides a traditional braid on my own hair. But after putting together this slideshow of nine mostly easy-ish braided hairstyles, I realized how I should be spending my long Thanksgiving weekend — practicing! Click on through to check out the different braids and how to do them. Keep reading »

What’s More Important, Fabulous Hair Or A Banging Outfit?

Having grown up as one of the youngest in a family of women, I never wanted for a hairstylist. There was always someone around who could do my hair better than I could, so learning how to do it myself wasn’t a huge priority.

My mom taught me that good hair grease and a scarf at night could keep a French braid or cornrows looking fresh for days or even a week. And when I was older, I looked for low-maintenance hairstyles, too. In high school, I’d take $10 of my allowance to get a wash and set at the Dominican hair salon, and the stylist always wrapped my hair when it was done in order to keep it straight. When I was ready, I’d fluff it out for the day, re-wrap it at night, and cover with a scarf. There was no flat-ironing, curling, brushing, or braiding in my routine, and I loved that. I pretty much knew what my hair would look like on a daily basis. Even now, my locs are extremely low-maintenance, leaving me more time to focus on what I’ll wear on a given day. Keep reading »

Hitler youth hair

The New York Times alerts us to the new hair trend for quirky (read: hipster) boys, which has many names: the “synth,” the “undercut” and the “Youth” — short for the Hitler Youth. Yes indeedy, the look of pure evil itself — hair shaved severely on both sides with a flop of gelled bangs across the top — is back in vogue. The cut and its variations are widespread in popularity across Europe, and its been worn by everyone from Joe Jonas to Win Butler of Arcade Fire and photographer Hedi Slimane. I have to say, I really like it! It looks modern and edgy, and I don’t believe guys wear it as a walking billboard for fascism. Keep reading »

Mind Of Man: If You Have Curly Hair, You Should Read This

Mind Of Man

At the risk of perpetuating the myth that there are differences between men and women, allow me to suggest one tiny little quirk that separates penis-enabled humanoids from the vagina-enhanced. Women think that men have manifold opinions about their hairstyles. This is not true. We barely have opinions about our own hair. Mostly, men just worry about whether they have hair or not. Then our thoughts become very mission-oriented. Shave it all or get a trim? Shampoo or shampoo AND condition? Goop or no goop? Blow dry or how does this stupid thing work or what’s a blow dryer? Hair Dos: 8 Easy Ponytail Alternatives

When it comes to doing hair, I am spectacularly incompetent. In fact, during the makeover portion of middle school slumber parties my friends would make me sit alone in a separate room so I couldn’t “mess anything up.” (It sounds cruel but it was actually a wise decision.) As a result I’ve spent much of my adult life alternating between two signature styles: the “sleep on it and hope it looks good in the morning” and the “rushed ponytail.” Lately I’ve been wanting to switch things up, so I scoured the internet for some cute, easy hairstyles (requirements: 10 minutes or less, slightly messy, no french braids). Here are 8 of them, and please feel free to share your own ideas/tips/links in the comments!
