Crave: Kairos Anti-Acne Hair Care Trio

Back in the day when we had severe acne, our dermatologist would tell us to keep our hair off our faces after he prescribed topical meds and antibiotics. We walked around with a ponytail for about two weeks before realizing that if we stopped using pore-clogging hair products we could let our hair down. Too bad Kairos’ Acne Care hair care line wasn’t around then because it could have helped us fight acne while keeping our hair looking perfect. The trio of products includes shampoo, conditioner, and an oil-clearing treatment, but Kairos also sells styling gel, hair spray, and hair glue that promise to pull double duty — healthy hair and clear skin. A New Book Looks At Hair As Art

A new book on hair, Hair’em Scare’em, showcases the hair on your head as a medium for artistic expression. While you may still be struggling with that updo, some artists are taking locks to a whole new creative level in photography, design, and illustration. It’s avant-garde art in which hair happens to be the material, from sculpture to jewelry to mustaches. For those fascinated by all things hirsute, a few sample pages after the jump. The Future Of Solar Power Is In Your Hairbrush

You might want to start saving those stray hairs that end up in your hairbrush or shower drain, because they may be worth something. If fact, your mane could potentially power the electricity for your home. The discovery comes from a Nepalese student who has invented a new way to make solar panels—using human hair instead of silicon as a conductor. As hair is an adequate conductor of electricity, it would significantly lower the price of solar panel production, and make construction of the devices accessible to everyone (well, except for bald people). So far, the experiment has succeeded in re-charging cell phones and batteries.

Would you be able to wrap your mind around using a blow-dryer or curling iron that was powered by exactly the thing it’s used for? Crazy! [InventorSpot]

Beware These 4 Updo Pitfalls

I can’t believe I’m saying this. I really can’t. But I have to: Freida Pinto‘s hair from last night’s British GQ event is an abomination. I can’t stand her ‘do. Her dress? Love it. Her acting potential? Amazing. Her hair? 100 percent Dolly Parton updo—stacked like a huge, frizz-ball mass atop her head. What can I say? The “messy pile” is an updo dealbreaker. Everyone gets a pass now and then, but if you’re looking to achieve an updo that’s more fresh than matronly, I’ve got a few nuggets of hair wisdom to keep in mind, after the jump… Keep reading »

Tyra (And Her Real Hair) Is Back And Chatting With Perez Hilton

“The Tyra Show” came back for its fifth season yesterday! Perez Hilton (barf) stopped by as the first guest. But the main event was Tyra Banks, who is usually weaved to within an inch of her life, hosting the whole show with her natural hair.

Unforch, Tyra’s real hair is anticlimactic—i.e. she’s not bald. Underneath those weaves and extensions she sashays down the red carpet in, she has regular, boring, shoulder-length brown hair. On yesterday’s show, though, she may have straightened it or had a relaxer in it or something, because it was not kinky in the slightest—which kind of defeats the purpose of her saying “It’s my real hair!” Doesn’t it?

Anyway, during the show, her hairstylist, Oscar, blow-dried and curled her natural ‘do, while she chatted with three women who have some serious issues about their real hair. One of her guests was a biracial woman whose white mom didn’t want people to know she had a black father. This evil mom shaved her daughter’s hair off as a kid because she didn’t want a “nappy-headed baby.” Keep reading »

Sneaky Tips For Prolonging Your Hair Color

My biggest beauty expense has to be my hair color. Each year, I willingly give hundreds and hundreds of dollars to salons. However, I’ve been in a weird situation lately where I am looking to cut back on my expenses, but not willing to give up my super blonde locks. My answer has been to reduce the frequency of my salon visits for dye jobs, and rely on some tricks for prolonging a natural yet pretty shade. Keep reading »

Hair Color Horror Stories!

After talking DIY haircut tales of terror earlier this week, naturally, we started thinking about other beauty disasters we’ve suffered, and hair color mishaps topped the list. Personally, I’ve endured them all. There were various Sun-In incidents (and yes, I went from brassy orange to green on that trip), cranberry juice-fueled binges, at-home highlights (do not attempt at home!), henna, the time black did not look as cool as I thought it would, bleached blonde (also not as rad as in theory), and a million and one crazy-looking streaks in between. But there’s nothing so seductive as the pretty model with perfect hair on the front of that cardboard box filled with promise, even though we now realize, in this age of the airbrushing revolution, that her ‘do is as fake as the dye itself. For the past few years I’ve sworn off coloring my own hair, but as every professional colorist I’ve ever interviewed has asserted, color correction is their bread and butter. After the jump, The Frisky staffers share their own experiences with hair color. Keep reading »

Make Up My Mind For Me: Cut, Grow Or Bangs?

I’m currently in the midst of a crippling case of haircut indecision. After three years of ever-changing, very short hair, I’ve finally let the stuff grow out to a reasonable length and now I’m bored all over again. Worse than that, I can’t even decide if I like it longer. I’m definitely not ready to go really short again, but perhaps a nice bob? Maybe some blunt bangs? Possibly I should just let it grow and grow ’til it sweeps the ground?

Clearly, I am ill-equipped to make this decision myself. So what better to do than turn my total inability to make up my mind into a poll for you? Vote on my next hair style below. Please use the pic at left of me last week as a reference point instead of just voting on your favorite hair style option in general. Just because you love bangs doesn’t mean I’d look good in them.

This hair cut is going down over the weekend, so vote right away, please! Keep reading »

Hair How To: It’s Not A Braid—It’s A Twist!

It’s been quite a braid-happy past few months. Which is why, when I spied this photo from the Venice Film Festival of Italian actress Laura Chiatti, I had to get all up in your (beauty) grill about it. Look closely at her hair. It ain’t a side braid; it’s a twist. (Remember those from back when? I was a huge braid and twist fan — whatever hairstyle worked to keep my long, stringy hair out of my face for school and didn’t take longer than three minutes to put together my mom could get behind.) Laura’s twist is chic and feels really boho. Want the hair how-to? It’s a snap, actually.

Kate Gosselin Gets A Makeover, Actually Looks Good

We’re officially in shock and awe here. Kate Gosselin, a woman whose very hairdo makes us cringe — and the fact that it’s caught on as a trend inspires us to shout out “why!?” and pump our fists at the heavens — is looking halfway decent in an upcoming issue of People. Shot in LA by Nigel Parry last week, Gosselin did not actually get a new haircut; this look is the result of some rather clever styling involving plenty of hairspray and possibly a clip-on thrown in the mix. Seriously though, she’s almost unrecognizable. As much as anyone in their right mind would probably ditch the old ‘do after seeing this pic, sadly, once you butcher your hair in a Gosselin fashion, it’s probably pretty hard to get back to square one. And you thought your bangs were hard to grow out. [ohnotheydidnt] Keep reading »
