Quick Tip Of The Day: Change Your Shampoos

This hair tip might not be anything too innovative, but it’s something so basic that it’s easily forgotten. If your hair has been looking dull and colorless lately, switch your shampoo! This applies especially to people with dyed hair or highlights, as buildup from your old shampoo will darken your locks and make you feel sad about the state of your roots. Changing shampoos helps to remove this buildup and can magically make your hair seem a shade lighter. Added advice: during times when your roots are growing out, avoid straightening serums or other greasy products that will encourage dark, oily residue.

Quotable: America Ferrera Will Never Have Blonde Hair Or Blue Eyes

America Ferrera: “There was this part in this movie with this director who shall remain nameless. It was a story set in Texas about this family and they weren’t sure who they were going to cast as the male role, so they were holding off on the female role, depending on if the male role was Latino or not. They didn’t want to put two Latinos in the same movie because then it would be ‘a Latino movie.’ So in my delusionary state, I thought if I dyed my hair blonde, I could show them that I could play anything. … So I stripped my hair. I looked f**king crazy. I only took one Polaroid and burned it.

Amber Tamblyn: “You wore whiteface…”

America Ferrera: “I did! I’m not even kidding! I had such resentment. And that was one of those moments where I just thought, ‘Wow.’ I didn’t even get the chance to fail at that part because of the color of my skin. If I didn’t get it because I gave a bad audition, then maybe my talents aren’t up to par. That I can work on. That I can change. That I can get better at. But how do I get better at being a blonde white girl? I can’t, because it’s not who I am. It was just so isolating.”

Ever Steep Your Hair In Tea?

We’ve heard about some weird natural hair treatments that involve everything and anything in your kitchen—eggs, avocado, honey, olive oil, beer even. For model Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, the secret ingredient is tea. She says, “To brighten and add a burst of shine to your hair, soak it in tea. The tea lowers the hair’s pH, neutralizes the color, and closes the cuticle for tons of shine and softness. Chamomile for blondes, regular tea for darker hair.”

What do you think? Would you give this quick beauty trick a try? We’re intrigued. [Modelinia]

Love It Or Hate It: Jessica Alba’s Blunt Cut

Last night at the People’s Choice Awards Jessica Alba unveiled a new hair look—a super-blunt, shoulder-length cut. What do you think? (I actually didn’t even recognize her at first!) For those of you in the “I love” category, here’s what you ask your stylist for (bring in a photo of Jess, too): No layers—well, no choppy or short layers. You do, technically, want very long (think: a half-inch to an inch shorter than your actual hair), non-chunky layers. This will get rid of some of the weight of your hair and add movement at the ends. I love the length Jessica chose, as it highlights the bluntness and is still long enough not to feel to bob-ish. To get her style: Jessica’s hair is pretty wavy to begin with so a lot of what you are seeing is natural wave. For the rest of us, blow-dry hair paying special attention to the roots—give them a thorough blast of air with your head flipped over to create volume at the roots. Then, to create wave, use a medium or a slightly larger barreled curling iron, wrap sections of hair around it leaving the bottom two inches free. Using a teeny tiny amount of styling creme, rake your fingers to gently separate the curl. Keep reading »
