I feel strangely ambivalent in regards to hair accessories. I love the look of them — there’s nothing cuter than a well-placed decorative clip or a contrasting headband accenting a ’60s-style bouffant … on someone else. I own a variety of hair accessories, which I often put on in the morning and end up pulling out right before I leave the house, because as a person with a great amount of nervous energy and an even greater amount of discontentment with my appearance (I’m so much fun), I just can’t seem to keep anything in my hair for longer than an hour or two. That being said, I have some kind of magnetic attraction to floral hair accessories that leads me to buy them and spend far more time debating wearing them and preening in front of the mirror wearing them than actually, you know, wearing them. Seeing as I’m a decidedly un-floral person in most other aspects, it must be the San Franciscan in me that’s drawn to a little flower perched atop a bobby pin — I just can’t help myself. I’m particularly obsessed with the perfect chiffon peonies that J. Crew sells in a million gorgeous colors (in stores only), but how easy would these be to DIY? I’ve never DAM (Done Anything Myself) because I am exceedingly untrustworthy with a hot glue gun, but this is one craft I think I could pull off without a hitch. Would you wear them? Would you wear them all day? If so, you are a far stronger person than I.

Criminal Beard-Cutting Sprees Rock Ohio’s Amish Community

amish man photo

The Amish are a generally quiet folk not known for crimes and misdemeanors. But one Amish community in Ohio is in turmoil after six women and 10 men have gone on a beard-cutting spree. Yes, beard-cutting. Amish men sport famously long beards in accordance with the Bible, which they say decrees that a man must stop shearing his facial scruff after marriage. But 16 Amish folks who are reportedly having “religiously-motivated” disputes over church discpline with the people they assault are snipping off beards with hoarse shears, scissors, and battery-powered clippers. Some female members of the Amish community have also had their hair cut off, which is also considered offensive. Keep reading »

Valentino Rodeo Drive Flagship Opening

Ciara showed up at a Valentino store opening earlier this week rocking some seriously striking two-tone hair. Her locks go from deep, dark brown at the roots to white hot blonde at eye level down to the ends. It’s a pretty extreme version of the ombre hair trend–so, what do you think? Is it edgy and stylish or way past time for a touch-up?

When Brianna Moore, a 6th grader at Shue-Medill Middle School in Delaware, raised her grades enough to make honor roll for the first time, her parents let her dye her hair pink as a reward. The next day she was kicked out of school and faced with a choice: bleach her hair, take classes via in-school suspension until the color faded out, or switch schools. It wasn’t until the American Civil Liberties Union stepped in that the school district finally backed down and reversed the decision. Today Brianna is rocking pink hair, a good report card, and an admirable attitude: “I need to stand up for myself when it’s right,” she said. As a fellow pink-haired lady, I’m beaming with pride. [USA Today] [Photo by Suchat Peterson of The News Journal]

An Examination Of The One Direction Boys’ Hairstyle Magic

Maybe you’ve heard of this British pop band One Direction? Perhaps you have a tweenage sister that’s begging you to take her to their concert? As far as we can tell, they’re just latest boy band iteration, this time masterminded by “X-Factor” and “American Idol” svengali Simon Cowell. As such, we’re not particularly interested in listening to their music, which my friend Julieanne refers to as “My Chemical Newsies.” But the hair? Oh geez, we could talk about that travesty all day.

Real-Life Rapunzel To Chop Her Hair

Rapunzel, Rapunzel isn’t just letting down her hair — she’s chopping it off for the first time in her life. Natasha Moraes de Andrade, 12, has the fairy-tale nickname because her hair is 5 feet, 2 inches long. That’s less than two inches shorter than her body, the Sun reports.

The Brazilian pre-teen has never had a haircut. But the arduous task of brushing for an hour and a half each day and a $600 yearly shampoo bill have led Moraes de Andrade to finally agree to trim her locks. Read more…
