Modern gynecology didn’t start until Southerner James Marion Sims started experimenting on slave women in the mid 19th century. Even less than two hundred years ago, doctors didn’t know how to diagnose or even treat a woman’s reproductive system.

Before Sims started exploring, women had to go through centuries of unbearable pain, minsdiagnosises (it must be a spirit living inside your uterus, ma’am), the lack of pain killers, and more just because medical professionals didn’t think to actually look inside a v*gina.
