Our usual “Hot Outta The Oven” chef, Teri Tsang Barrett, is on vacay this week, so our lovely intern Annika stepped up with this recipe for a take on a Greek salad. Clearly this one should not be hot outta the oven.
Since, the Food and Drug Administration announced last week that tomatoes are safe to eat again, I thought this recipe for a tomato salad with feta and cucumbers sounded refreshing on a hot summer evening. Tomatoes contain powerful antioxidants, like vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene and lycopene. This salad is not only healthy, but would be perfect for a picnic date, just add the Sangria or beverage of choice.

There’s no denying that the best part of a cupcake is the frosting, and now that the whole cupcake craze is dying down, a handful of bakeries are offering up the best of this treat in small shot-sized cups. Frosting shots have been billed by College Candy as the delicious answer to a regular shot, but without the hangover. I, however, don’t think anything can compare to good, old-fashioned tequila.

While poking around online yesterday, I came across this recipe for a single serving of chocolate cake (the photo at left is merely my serving suggestion). Now, being a single gal who likes to bake, I get a little sad from time to time when I make a cake or a pie and have no possible way of eating it all myself. That’s why I hope this recipe isn’t crap. The cake takes just five minutes to make and doesn’t involve mixers, cake pans, or any of the other required kitchen accessories you might not own if you haven’t had a wedding registry. I’m going to make myself a mini cake and report back on how it looks and what it tastes like, but if any of you try the recipe, let me know whether the mini cake is a success! (And send photos to tips@thefrisky.com.) [Dizzy Dee]

Sure, July’s most famous holiday is the one celebrating our fine nation’s birth, but let’s not forget one of the month’s other noteworthy events: National Ice Cream Month. In 1984, Ronald Reagan designated the whole month as such, and he also named the third Sunday of July (yesterday) National Ice Cream Day. His proclamation called for people to observe these with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” I neglected to eat any ice cream yesterday, but in the last 10 days of the month, I plan to give ice cream a proper celebration.

Summertime is all about summer lovin’. How do you go get you some? By getting out of town. Here’s how we get frisky on vacation.
1. Destination Comfortable Make sure your partner is into the vacation. Don’t drag your date to someplace they’d complain about, like taking a meat and potatoes guy to a vegan spa. You both want to be at ease, so you’ll be easy.

Think a summer getaway translates to an emptying of your wallet? Not necessarily. With a bit of research, some advance planning, and the following tips you can enjoy high times on a low budget this summer and beyond.
1. Train by travel. With gas prices on the rise again, and the cost of plane tickets not any better, trade in your car for an old-fashioned trip on a locomotive. Take a long weekend journey through New England, along California’s southern coast, aboard Canada’s famed Rocky Mountaineer, or else hop the cross-country Amtrak that will transport you from one ocean to another in less than a week.

It would be hard to find a more fitting pair than of sex and travel. Here, one adventurer, who has kissed an uncounted number of men who don’t share her zip code, shares her experience combining the two through more than 30 countries.
Obviously, the word “summer” goes perfectly with the word “fling,” but trying to combine the two during your stay at a 12-bed hostel while you’re visiting some over-priced European country can be tricky, though it’s not impossible. I love to stay in hostels even in a booming economy because they’re the best place to meet other travelers – unless you encounter a 56 -year old who creeps all the other guests out—and learning the hostel hookup ropes is key to the hostel experience. So what do you do once you’re ready to swap spit with the man of your dreams and he happens to be staying at the same 20-Euro-per-night place as you for the next few days? (NOTE: For our purposes, “hookup” is used in a PG or PG-13 manner, unless you really like performing for an audience.)

Summer is all about the seaside vacay so Concierge Magazine has compiled a list of the World’s Sexiest Beaches. They based their decisions on general beach-goer hotness, “hook up potential” and “privacy”—the three key factors for gettin’ frisky. So where are the coolest places to get sand and sweet action in your bottoms? Topping the list are :
Lake Nyasa The large natural body of water in Mozambique features actual cougars- not the wild Janice Dickinson kind.
Lanzarote Part of the Canary Islands with 90 volcanic shores for plenty of private places to get freaky.
Kas Turkey’s seaside ancient ruins are known for tourist attractions in both senses of the word.

In the words of the great Will Smith, “Welcome to Miami…” where people really do party “all night on the beach ‘til the break of dawn.” As the sun gloriously beats down, the streets are lined with so many al fresco diners and strolling locals that you start to wonder if anyone actually works in this town. But really, how can they? So grab your sunscreen (extra SPF here!) and hang on while The Frisky shows you how to get a taste of the real Miami heat with these sizzlin’ South Florida hot spots.

I’m one of those annoying Californian transplants that constantly complains about the lack of good (cheap) Mexican food outside of my home town. A bowl of $15 guacamole in NYC will cost $8 at home and don’t even get me started on my inability to find a good burrito. The worst part is that I’ve never even found a proper fish taco in my adopted city, so I set out to make my own.

Thinking about going on a sexpedition? Well, Stockholm, Sweden, was just voted the city in the world with the most beautiful women by Traveler’s Digest. So consider yourself warned of the competition! The cuties in Copenhagen, Denmark came in a close second, and Buenos Aires, Argentina in third. Although, the entire survey seems skewed since Los Angeles came in fifth. How can four cities beat a town filled with the likes of Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie?! Oh well, who cares. Let’s focus on what’s really important: where o’ where are the finest looking gentlemen? Inquiring minds want to know! [The Local]

Three years ago, I spent New Year’s in a Middle Eastern country with lots of Jewish people. While my mother was pressuring me to try and “find a nice Jewish boy” as I traipsed around the desert (looking dehydrated and sweaty), the guy I had started seeing a few weeks earlier was still at home in the States. I spent a significant part of the two-week trip trying to figure out whether I should call—shouldn’t I be allowed to wish him a Happy New Year? My mind was spewing out a ton of reasons to pick up the phone and dial the number I’d written on a slip of paper and kept in my pocket, but I decided against it. I wasn’t ready to give up the power of seeming carefree and only slightly interested. And I didn’t want to scare him off just because I had a serious phone addiction. More importantly, I wanted to prevent myself from being hurt by first learning how he felt about me. So instead of wasting precious vacation time on a long distance conversation, I climbed hills, drank lots, and enjoyed the mud in the Dead Sea. By the end of my trip, I was so distracted that I didn’t even consider sending a one-line text.
But we’re not getting beehives at the beauty salons anymore, and playing hard to get isn’t the only tactic (even though we did date after I returned). For your convenience, I’ve broken down every possible travel scenario for you, because there’s nothing better than taking some real time to over analyze every new move you make with a guy you just started dating.

Last time I checked, cooking for groups on a hot summer day was on my “Top Ten list of Things I Don’t Want To Do"…until I was stuck with an apartment full of people to feed on a sweltering weekend in NYC and nowhere to hide. Out popped this pasta dish that actually peaks in flavor when it’s served at room temp. If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, refrigerate the pasta and once you’re ready for re-service, let it sit out for 15 minutes before giving it a good stir and maybe another drizzle of olive oil and some salt and pepper. And pssst – this is one of those recipes that sneaks in under $15.

A trip to the beach this weekend left me with some pretty nasty sunburns. Yes, I applied sunscreen. SPF 30, in fact. Apparently that wasn’t enough, and now I need to figure out what I can wear that won’t inflict more pain (and will distract my coworkers, who keep coming over to gawk at my crayon-red splotches). This blouse-y t-shirt from Old Navy will let my burns breathe while making me look slightly nautical. I did just come back from the seashore, after all. [Old Navy]

Atlanta, the Dirty South, HOTlanta, the ATL—whatever you wanna call it, Atlanta, Georgia has an incredible history. Since the Civil Rights Movement, the city was kinda known as “The City Too Busy To Hate” because it was one of the only Southern cities with a history of fighting for desegregation—as a result, it became a popular city for many African-Americans in the South to relocate to. Atlanta has a vibrant cultural scene, with many amazing restaurants and bars, not to mention a historical side that is not to be missed. After the jump, our Frisky for your next visit to the ATL.

Baby bumps are sooooo hot right now. All the trends from clothing to red carpet arm candy involve a baby on board. As if the cover of every magazine wasn’t enough, now pregnant chicks are getting an even bigger scoop courtesy of Baskin Robbins. Today is the ice creamery’s Happy Bump Day, a play on the usual hump day. So, if you’ve got a bun in the oven, you can get a free cone of soft serve on them all day. As for just normally fat me, I think I can just fake being knocked up, right? Hey, it’s free ice cream! [Ad Week and Baskin Robbins]

There have been many times I’ve put on way too much make-up only to coyly sip a martini at the bar, chatting with a close girlfriend. Our first goal in meeting for a drink was to talk (there’s always random stuff to catch up on). Our second—the one requiring the lipstick and mascara—was to meet men. It never works; we do way too much talking and remain in an anti-social huddle, sitting on our bar stools the entire time.
