The Soapbox: “What If Jerry Sandusky’s Victims Had Been Girls?” Is A Misguided Question, Jezebel

Paterno Fired
The students who are protesting need a reality check. Read More »

Earlier today, I wrote about the firing of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in the aftermath of the sexual abuse allegations against his former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky. It is an utterly tragic case for obvious reasons; Sandusky is accused of molesting and raping eight boys over a period of 15 years and when a witness to one of his assaults reported it to his superiors, they didn’t go to the police. The case has illuminated just how far people will go to protect their “reputations” and to adhere to a chain of command rather than their own moral compass. The student protest/riot in State College, PA, following Paterno’s firing further emphasized that hero worship leaves otherwise decent people blind. The more I read, the more depressed I feel.

But I also came across one article that left me incredibly annoyed. Over at Jezebel, Erin Gloria Ryan has written a piece which asks the question, “What if Penn State’s coach had victimized girls?” and tries to make the point that if Sandusky’s victims had been female, the public, private, and media response to the allegations would be very different. While I wholeheartedly agree that female sexual assault victims are very often not taken seriously, and that they are somehow blamed, at least in part, for the crimes against them, etc., I have a serious problem with the Penn State scandal being used as an example of how male sexual assault victims are treated somehow “better” than female sexual assault victims. Today’s Lady News: You Can’t Ban Gay Teens From Dating, Utah

Today's Lady News
  • The American Civil Liberties Union sent a little FYI to school superintendents across Utah, warning them that “banning” students from dating other students of the same sex is unconstitutional. As in, they can’t do it. The ACLU was prompted to send the reminder when a female student was reportedly asked to leave a school dance because her date was also a girl. [Advocate]

Yesterday we learned, courtesy of a New York Post columnist, that Herman Cain‘s sexual harassment accuser Sharon Bialek is too pretty to be credible as a victim because she must have been “asking for it.” I mean, she was wearing lipstick at her press conference, the hussy!

Today we learn, courtesy of a web site called Herman Cain PAC , that another sexual harassment accuser, newly identified on Tuesday as government official Karen Kraushaar, is too ugly to be a victim. She’s an “ugly bitch,” in fact, and a photograph of the competitive equestrian posing with a horse required the caption, “Just to be clear, Karen Kraushaar is the one on the left.”  Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: NY Post Columnist Suggests Cain Accuser Is Too Pretty To Be Credible

Today's Lady News
  • New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser tore into Sharon Bialek, the first woman to come forward with a face/name while accusing Herman Cain of sexual harassment. Why, the attractive blonde is so pretty that she must have been asking for it and/or making it up for more attention!  [The Stir

  • Mississippi is voting on a “fetal personhood” amendment today, which would criminalize all abortions by declaring a fertilized egg as a “person.” Yesterday, while speaking to a crowd, a woman named Cristen Hemmis who was kidnapped, raped and shot twice asked Lt. Governor Phil Bryant, who supports the amendment, to have “sympathy” for women like her. Phil Bryant’s reply? He told her the personhood amendment was a “battle of good and evil of Biblical proporitions” and that if abortion remains legal, “Satan wins.” Yes, he said this to a woman who was KIDNAPPED, RAPED, and SHOT. I give up. [Think Progress, NEMS360.com] Keep reading »

A fifth woman has accused Herman Cain, that charming rouĂ©, of sexual harassment. Donna Donella, 40, of Arlington, Virginia, said Cain tried to get her to set him up with an Egyptian businesswoman and when she refused, he asked her out to dinner. She refused that, too. (I mean, who wants to be a guy’s second choice, amiright?) Keep reading »

Nine-and-a-half-times out of 10 I completely agree with other feminists about what they identify as sexism. But sometimes I really do disagree and the lingerie shop in Sweden that asks employees to display their bra size on their name tags is one of those times. The chain store, Change, has asked their female sales clerks for the past three years to wear tags because it will help customers see what is right for their body type.

One employee, however, is not happy about it. She has contacted Sweden’s Commercial Employee’s Union, which found the bra size reveals “a clear case of discrimination” and could possibly be breaking Swedish law, although it’s unclear from the article in Sweden’s Local newspaper what law that would be.
