Today’s Lady News: Egyptian “Virginity Test” Doctor Acquitted

  • An Egyptian doctor who forced “virginity tests” — aka sexual assault — on female protesters detained in Cairo’s Tahrir Square has been acquitted by a military tribunal. Victims claimed these “virginity tests” were aimed to scare and humiliate women from protesting. [Huffington Post]

An IM Conversation at Frisky HQ:

Jessica: Oh, Lord, a chess tournament has banned cleavage.

Amelia:  I love chess.

Jessica:  But do you love playing chess with your titties hanging out? Apparently that’s a problem.

Amelia:  Especially then. I would do it to distract my opponent if they were a 15-year-old prodigy. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: GA Lawmaker Compares Women To Cows & Pigs

  • A Republican state representative compared women to livestock earlier this week, while he spoke in favor of criminalizing abortion after 20 weeks. Speaking to the restriction on abortion even when the fetus isn’t expected to live, Terry England said, “I’ve had the experience of delivering calves, dead and alive — delivering pigs, dead and alive. It breaks our hearts to see those animals not make it.” Yes, your reproductive health care was just compared to that of a barnyard animal.  [Raw Story]

Today’s Lady News: Ohio Bill Would Require Men Seeking Viagra To Get Sex Therapist OK

  • Men looking for a prescription for Viagra would first need to get a sex therapist’s permission, a cardiac stress test, and confirmation that “the patient’s symptoms are not solely attributable to one or more psychological conditions” under a new bill introduced by State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland). The bill is meant to underscore the inequality in the anti-abortion bills that require women to get medically unnecessary ultrasounds and other procedures. [Business Week]

Hitched: I Love My Dad, But I Don’t Want Him To Give Me Away

A New Name
Rachel and her husband chose a new last name when they married. Read More »

I think I just got away with telling my dad he won’t be giving me away at my wedding — and the world didn’t fall apart.

I’d been putting it off, the telling him, partly because I never know whether my dad is going to care. I know he cares a lot about high-quality French fries and Chevy sport utility vehicles that rolled off the line between 1996 and 1999 (must have tailgate and be black, red or white). But the emotional stuff is a total gamble.

There was the time he tried to keep one of my high school boyfriends from using our upstairs bathroom because “he might have VD,” which I now realize was code for “Andie, you are wasting your time on this guy.” He cried when I tried on my wedding dress for him, but not when he dropped me off at college halfway across the country.

So I had no idea how he would react if I told him that I don’t want to be given away on my wedding day. Maybe he would be fine with it. Or maybe it would genuinely hurt him. But there’s not much that hurts me more than being treated like a piece of property. Keep reading »
