Today’s Lady News: Women More Likely To Support Obama’s Birth Control Decision

  • Women are more likely than men to support President Obama’s mandate that insurers cover the cost of birth control, according to a new poll of registered voters by Poll Position. Forty-six percent of women supported the mandate, compared to only 37 percent of men. Anyone else surprised these numbers are so low? [UPI]

  • A Michigan school district has introduced a new comprehensive sex ed program that will discuss homosexuality and transgender issues with 4th and 5th graders. This has Gretchen Carlson of Fox News very upset that kids are learning “explicit sex.” [Think Progress Keep reading »

Danica Patrick and Rush Limbaugh photo

I don’t know why anyone is asking NASCAR driver Danica Patrick about her opinion on the Obama administration’s contraception rules, but oh well, that’s besides the point. She  supports it. Radio host Rush Limbaugh is not happy about this. Talking about Danica Patrick on his show, he guffawed, “She said, ‘I leave it up to the government to make good decisions for America.’ … What do you expect from a woman driver? I don’t know why everybody was so shocked.” Oh, you know those cuh-razy women drivers. They can’t parallel park and they support birth control as preventative health care. Sigh. But at least Rush didn’t call Danica Patrick a “bitch,” right? [Think Progress]

Today’s Lady News: More Birth Control Pills Recalled

  • Birth control pills made by Glenmark Generics are being recalled because some of the active/non-active pills have been placed in the wrong order. Check at the link to see if one of your packets of pills has been recalled and use another form of birth control in the meantime! [MSNBC]
  • An Alabama lawmaker is backing off his support for an anti-abortion “transvaginal ultrasound” bill, which is similar to the one which caused an uproar recently in Virginia. [Talking Points Memo]
  • Virginia’s state Senate has advanced a bill mandating women receive an ultrasound before an abortion. (Previously the language of this bill would have required women to have an invasive “transvaginal ultrasound,” but that has since been dropped.) A Democratic state senator proposed an amendment that would require the state to pay for the exam if she cannot afford it, that insurance be required to cover it, and that a woman not be required to have an ultrasound if her doctor tells her the fetus has severe abnormalities. The Republican majority rejected all those suggestions, but did add an exception for rape and incest claims that have been reported to police. [MSNBC] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: WA Pharmacies Don’t Have To Sell Plan B, Judge Rules

  • Pharmacies in Washington state are no longer required to carry the morning-after pill/Plan B following a ruling by a district judge. Two pharmacies had claimed that being forced to provide the morning-after pill infringed on their freedom of religion. [Nerve]
  • Jan Berenstain, the children’s book author who co-wrote The Berenstain Bears series with her husband, died on Friday at the age of 88. Jan and Stan Berenstein wrote over 300 Berenstain Bears books, starting all the way back in 1962. [TMZ]
  • Utah’s House of Representatives advanced a bill that bars sexual education from being taught unless it is abstinence-only. [Newser]
  • Pennsylvania may have struck down the rape-y “transvaginal ultrasound” requirement from one of the anti-abortion bills working its way through the state legislature. But there’s an even scarier anti-abortion bill in Pennsylvania that we should be worried about as well. [Raw Story] Keep reading »

Watch Video

This clip is all kinds of ew. Via the Women’s Media Center on February 20th, the Fox 5 San Diego sports reporter Ross Shimabuku called race car driver Danica Patrick a “bitch” in a spot that was apparently about how “sexy” she is — and how ungrateful she is when reporters ask her about it. Ahh, a one-two obnoxiousness punch! Keep reading »

With Chris Brown and Rihanna releasing two remixes together and rumors of them seeing each other flying, it’s understandable to feel disappointed in Rihanna. It’s hard watching anyone step into such an obvious trap, especially when she’s been warned repeatedly of how dangerous it is. Add to that the fear that Rihanna’s choice to forgive Brown sends a signal to young fans that domestic violence is no big deal, and you have more than enough justifications to be upset with Rihanna.

But if you sincerely want to reduce the incidence of domestic violence in our society, I beg you to refrain from judging her. Strange as it may sound, judging women who return to their abusers only makes the problem worse. Keep reading »
