Today’s Lady News: Arizona Bans Abortions After 20 Weeks

  • Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer signed a law yesterday which bans abortions after 20 weeks (rare to begin with), except in cases which risk of death or serious injury. The law also mandates an ultrasound 24 hours prior to having an abortion and requires state officials to create a website which shows fetal growth at various stages. [MSNBC]
  • The breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen For The Cure sent as many grants this year to Planned Parenthood affiliates as it has in the past. This comes despite a politically-motivated attempt earlier in the year by Komen to halt grants to PP, which caused great controversy. [Washington Post]

Today’s Lady News: Ann Romney Gets An Apology

Today's Lady News photo
  • Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen, whose remark about Ann Romney “not working” recently blew up, has apologized. “As a mom I know that raising children is the hardest job there is. As a pundit, I know my words on CNN last night were poorly chosen,” Rosen said. “I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let’s declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance.” [Washington Post
  • But Rosen is still getting bashed by the Catholic League for being a lesbian who adopted her two children with her former partner: “Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised five of her own.” Ooh, that’s low. [Think Progress
  • Frisky contributor Megan Carpentier connects Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney to Hillary Clinton’s controversial comments almost 20 years ago that she could have “stayed home and baked cookies and had teas” instead of pursuing law. [Raw Story] Keep reading »

Election year silliness is in full swing.

Two days ago, Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen appeared on “Anderson Cooper 360″ to discuss the Republicans’ problems with women and Mitt Romney’s use of his wife, Ann Romney, on the campaign trail to talk about economic issues affecting women.

“Guess what?” Rosen said. “His wife has actually never worked a day in her life. She’s never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing.” She also called Mitt “so old-fashioned when it comes to women.”

Ann Romney then joined Twitter and sent out her first tweet: “I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work.”

And all hell broke loose. Keep reading »

Just over a year ago, my son Felix was born via gestational surrogacy. He came out of me nine months early and because of my broken belly, his babycake was baked in a wonderful angel’s oven and now — I can’t believe it — he’s a year old and walking. He has expanded my capacity for joy a thousand-fold. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Texas Teacher Fired For Unwed Pregnancy

Samford, who is 29, tells ABC News she is in a committed relationship and planning to get married this summer. But Heritage Christian Academy still didn’t think this slutty slut slut was a good “Christian role model” and fired her — even refusing to keep her on staff if she and her fiancé married sooner. • Rick Santorum suspended his presidential campaign today after an interminably long campaign riddled with the most horrendous, anti-woman, bigoted of comments. I look forward to what Santorum will be able to cook up now that he has all this free time on his hands. [New York Times
