Today’s Lady News: Susan G. Komen Cancer Charity Halts Grants To Planned Parenthood

  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the charity synonymous with breast cancer research, has halted grants to Planned Parenthood — seemingly caving to pressure from anti-abortion activists who have the nationwide clinics under investigation. Susan G. Komen grants mainly were used for breast exams (and other breast health services) for women who otherwise could not afford them. But anti-abortion groups have targeted those charitable donations because some Planned Parenthood clinics also perform abortions. A CEO of a Planned Parenthood in Virginia, which received a 2010 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, told the AP, “We’re kind of reeling … cancer doesn’t care if you’re pro-choice, anti-choice, progressive, conservative.” [Washington Post]

Today’s Lady News: Three Canadians Convicted Of So-Called “Honor Killings”

  • Three Afghan-Canadians have been convicted of murdering three teenaged girls and their dad’s first wife in so-called “honor killings.” Two of the daughters were reportedly killed because they wanted boyfriends against their fathers’ wishes; the father also said his daughters dressed in Western clothes. The eldest daughter at one point left home to live in a shelter because of abuse at home, which is reportedly when their father, brother and mother decided to kill the four women. What a terribly sad story. I am heartened, at least, to see the killers punished. [BBC]

Campus Confidential: On Attending A Women-Only College

campus confidential

When I initially began the college application process, I had absolutely no interest in attending a single sex institution. In fact, I knew exactly what I wanted in a school. I wanted to go to a small liberal arts college in New York City that was full of intelligent, impassioned and driven students; dedicated professors who would take a personal interest in their students rather than put them on the backburner in favor of their own research or hand them over to TAs; an amazing alumni network with plentiful internship opportunities; an excellent women’s studies department; and an emphasis on writing across the board.  And that school is Barnard College — a school that also happens to be single sex.  Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: British Plastic Surgeons Say Advertising Their Procedures Should Be Banned

  • The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, a society of plastic surgeons, says what they perform are medical procedures and the procedures should not be advertised the same way clothing or cosmetics are. BAAPS also asked that annual checks be carried out on surgeons. The group said it is concerned by the increasing attitude that just anyone can perform plastic surgery, even people without a license, and believe that advertising and makeover TV shows are only furthering that reputation. Interesting. [BBC

A North Carolina politician sent an email to all his colleagues calling for “public hangings” of abortion providers as a deterrent.  Republican Rep. Larry Pittman wrote in an email:

“We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out. Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner. If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”

This is all kinds of crazy that I don’t even know where to start. Comparing abortion providers — a safe, legal, at times life-saving medical practice — to murderers, rapists and kidnappers? Suggesting public hangings as a cost-saving measure? Hell, why not go whole hog and whip out the guillotine? Keep reading »

“Any feminist out there who doesn’t support me gets a big boo because you’ve got one person out there who is advocating for women in Hollywood and you’re going to slag that person? If you’re a feminist, you should be up my butt. I have no idea if I’ve helped feminism or set it back, because people see me as such a polarizing figure. I hope it’s the former. But if I can’t even get feminists on my side, maybe I’m not helping.”

– Diablo Cody, who wrote “Young Adult,” is certainly sick of being criticized by feminists (and their at-times strange bedfellows, conservatives) for various crimes, like the fact that “Juno” didn’t involve an abortion, Diablo’s past career as a stripper, and plenty of other violations dictated by The Not Feminist Enough Police.

FWIW, I’m a feminist and I’m on your side, Diablo. [Guardian UK]
