Today’s Lady News: Young Women Want Career & Money Moreso Than Men, Study Claims

Today's Lady News photo
  • Young women ages 18 to 34 want a career and to earn good money moreso than their male counterparts do, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. The recent study says two-thirds of women prioritize advancing their career, while 15 years ago it was closer to half of all young women who felt that way. Watch out, boys! [Los Angeles Times]
  • Oklahoma’s “fetal personhood” bill, which would have granted personhood status to fertilized eggs, has failed in the state Legislature. “Fetal personhood” bills would criminalize all abortion and IVF treatments. [Reuters]
  • Tennessee’s House of Representatives has advanced an anti-abortion bill that would allow prosecutors to charge someone for harming an embryo — the cells that form into a fetus up to eight weeks after conception. Harming a “viable fetus” — as in, an eight-month’s pregnant woman who is murdered — is already illegal in the state, so this current bill is a clear attack on abortion rights by trying to define an embryo as a “person.” [Think Progress]

Today’s Lady News: “Female Logic” The Actual Name Of A Game Show

Today's Lady News photo
  • “Female Logic” is the actual name of a game show in the country of Georgia, which borders Europe and Russia. The show is being targeted by human rights activists because it’s f**king offensive as shit. On “Female Logic,” six men win a cash prize if they correctly predict how six young, pretty women will answer questions about stuff like astronomy. [IWPR]
  • An Alabama state representative who once tried to ban any book that “promotes homosexuality” is now trying to drastically restrict access to the morning-after pill.  Despite the fact that the FDA recently stated EC should be available on the shelves for all women, State Rep. Gerald Allen (R) proposed a bill requiring a woman to take EC under a doctor’s supervision and have a follow-up visit to ensure taking the pill was effective. [Think Progress]

  • A “friend” of Amanda Bynes (um, probably her publicist) tells gossip blog Radar Online that party-hardy comparisons to Lindsay Lohan after Amanda’s recent DUI arrest are “sexist.” The friend said, “Comparisons between the two are just ridiculous as Amanda has never been arrested for drug possession or for stealing anything … Amanda doesn’t harbor any negative feelings towards Lindsay, she doesn’t even know her, she just thinks it’s sexist that the two are being compared. Men in Hollywood that get arrested for DUIs don’t face the same scrutiny that women do and this is what really irks Amanda.” It’s true. It’s so, so true. [Radar Online]

I’m fairly certain that Rush Limbaugh could take Goodnight, Moon and twist it into a tale of shrill harpies hellbent on John Bobbitt-ing the male species and strangling newborn babies with their long, flowing strands of armpit hair.

That is the only explanation for his wildly inaccurate (and, it should go without saying, wildly sexist) April 16 interpretation of a study published this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. According to Rush, the study concluded “the real reason women pursue careers is because they fear they are too unattractive to get married.” (He also wondered, “Is this the real reason liberal women insist on working?”)

According to the actual study … not so much.

Another day, another bombastically link-baity piece on the Internet to get everyone’s feathers ruffled!

Today’s linkbait comes courtesy of The New York Daily News op-ed page, in which writer S.E. Cupp hammers away at Democratic consultant Hilary Rosen for a foot-in-mouth comment she made on “Anderson Cooper 360″ last week, that stay-at-home  mother (SAHM) of five Ann Romney “never worked a day in her life.” Rosen later clarified that she meant Ann shouldn’t be her millionaire husband’s earpiece for issues on women and the economy; alas, her point was lost by inelegant phrasing.

The rudeness of Rosen’s comments were chastised by everyone from First Lady Michelle Obama, members of the president’s staff, and feminists such as myself. But that fact has been conveniently ignored by S.E. Cupp. Instead, she wants to pat Ann Romney on the back for “marrying up,” writing:

[W]hile liberal women may praise Ann for (at least) getting herself an education, where is the praise for Ann’s best decision of all — to marry well? Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Extra-Large Condom Ad Zeroes In On Ladies Scared Of Big Penises

Today's Lady News photo
  • Big penises have us running to lock ourselves in the bathroom, don’t they, ladies? That’s what the ad agency behind a (real?) ad for Prudence Extra-Large Condoms wants to think. Although the idea of the ad is clever — a long, wordy rant from a guy trying to be “persuasive” — the actual text is kind of rapey, especially the line about “the screams are part of the fragile lady role.” Sorry, bros, but your condom ad is not sexy.
