“With ‘Bachelorette,’ I thought of these really thin, beautiful women, who if you saw walking down the street you’d think, ‘These girls have their lives together and it makes me feel bad about myself.’ I wanted to examine how they are gluttonous through drug addiction, materialism, sexual voraciousness, eating disorders — literally take, take, take, consume, consume, consume. Then there is their friend, Becky, who is moving into adulthood. She’s the one who appears to be the gluttonous one, who you might point at and say she has a problem because she’s overweight. You might feel better about yourself and move on. But she’s the one who’s getting out of the prison that these characters have created for themselves. …  I couldn’t for the life of me think of one good moniker for these women and who they are that wasn’t punitive. You know what I mean, like Sluts’ or ‘Bitches,’ and who would see a movie called that? All we’ve got is this feminized version of this male idea, that’s, by the way, a great thing if you’re a man. If you’re not married and you’re a straight guy, the world is your fuckin’ oyster, but if you’re single and you’re a woman and you’ve got something going for you, it’s just so sad you’re not married yet. It doesn’t make any sense to me. But what do I know? I’m sad and alone.”

Watching “Bachelorette” on Video On Demand is on my to-do list this evening, so I was interested to read this Q&A with the writer/director Leslye Headland. “Bachelorette,” as you’ve probably heard, is about four high school friends who reunite for one of their weddings — and the other three freak the fuck out because they’re still single and childless. And snorting loads of cocaine, apparently. As someone who is gearing up for her 10-year high school reunion and is also “sad and alone” according to societal standards, I have to say it’s a topic of interest! The subject of the movie, I mean. Meet The Women Who Financially Support Their Husbands

  • This week’s cover story in The New York Times Magazine addresses the economy’s effect on marriages, specifically ones where the wife is now the breadwinner and is supporting an unemployed or under-employed husband.  Sounds fascinating. [New York Times Magazine]
  • If Sandra Fluke’s speech at the DNC last night was intended to make wackadoodle Republicans go nuts about that “slut” and make themselves look even worse, then mission fuckin’ accomplished!  [Slate]

Some Jerk Called The DNC “The Vagina Monologues”

Today's Lady News photo
  • CNN contributor Erick Erickson tweeted last night that the Democratic National Convention was “the Vagina Monologues,” because, you know, LADIES.  (Or, as blogger Amanda Marcotte wittily put it, he is “not a fan of women talking.”)  [Think Progress, Slate]

Hitched: Who Does The Most Housework In A Marriage?

And lo, the Lord did create the men and women who populated the earth. The manifold men did go to the office and get good jobs in middle management and take the trash out on Thursdays while lady helpmates did joyously stay home and wear aprons and make dinner and vacuum and mop and scrub the toilets and make the beds and raise the children and dust the bookshelves and manage the home accounts and do the grocery shopping and mend the clothing and take the children to appointments and preside over the laundry apparatus, which the Lord, in all his wisdom, saw fit to make too difficult for men to comprehend.

This was called the division of labor, and behold, it was fucked up. Keep reading »

Turkish Woman Shoots, Decapitates Her Rapist

Today's Lady News photo
  • Well, that’s a lot to process: a pregnant rape victim shot and decapitated her rapist and then dumped his head in the town square, telling police who arrested her, “That is the head of the one who toyed with my honor.” The rapist also allegedly possessed nude photos of the 26-year-old mother of two, which he was threatening to show to her parents in an attempt to humiliate her family. She is quoted in the UK’s Daily Mail explaining: “He kept saying that he would tell everyone about the rape. My daughter will start school this year. Everyone would have insulted my children. Now no one can. I saved my honour.  They will now call children the kids of the women who saved her honor.” On the one hand I honestly could care less about what sort of punishments befall rapists; I’m of the opinion they should rot in prison the rest of their lives. But on the other hand, it’s absolutely tragic that this woman was motivated to murder by reclaiming her “honor.” How terribly sad that this woman felt tarnished as a human being. Take A Tour Of Gloria Steinem’s Fabulous NYC Apartment

You won't believe how much she paid for it!

As Gloria Steinem walks Oprah through the beautiful and elaborately decorated NYC apartment she’s lived in since 1966, it’s hard to imagine that until recently, she treated it as a temporary home. “For years and years and years I lived out of cardboard boxes,” says Steinem. “I was brought up to think you didn’t make a home [without] husband and children–you didn’t make it for yourself.” We’re glad she finally settled in, because it’s fascinating to get a glimpse into Steinem’s home life, from the travel mementos and feminist artwork to the living room where she launched Ms. Magazine. The sprawling apartment is worth millions now, but you won’t believe how much she paid for it when she and five of her single pals bought it in the late 80s (hint: it was less than a quarter of the price of Avril Lavigne’s wedding ring). Yep, time to cry. [Refinery 29]
